Malcom X, Cesar chavez, Angela Davis, Gloria Steinem, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Emma Goldman and all the unknown people were part of the struggle - we must continue the struggle!
Youth Against War and Racism (YAWR) is a diverse group of high school students, junior college and university students, youth and young adults organizing to change our schools, communities and our nation. We are student activists starting YAWR clubs in our schools and youth and young people organizing in our communities. Our generation wants change and were gonna be the ones to make it happen!!
Who I'd like to meet: Youth against war and racism!! High School students, youth and young people who want to become activists and fight for social justice and social change. Students and youth who support immigrant rights and oppose unjust racist attacks on immigrants. Students and youth who want kick military recruiters out of our public schools!! Students, youth and young people who are pissed about the injustice and racism of Katrina, upset about the state of our public schools, who hate the WASL and it's graduation requirement, students who have been treated badly by the school system, students who experience and/or want to fight the oppression of racism, classism, sexism, homophobia and discrimination based on physical or mental ability. Veterans, military families and currently enlisted who want this war to end and want to bring our troops home now!
Ten DANK things you can do to help legalize marijuana (in no particular order).
1. Write a letter to a policy maker. This can be local, state or federal level-if we all take the time to do this it makes a huge difference. Take a few minutes to an hour to draft a letter-then once a week take five minutes-send it to a different official, when there is a bill related to marijuana you will have a good base. DANK recommends using a government website or visiting http://www.makepotlegal555.org to find address information for legislators.
2. Encourage others to write their legislators-each time you write to one, pass the name and address around to your like minded friends-get them writing in, too.
3. Volunteer for a Pro-Cannabis event! Look on online, maybe there is one in your area-there are several on the DANKinfo website and at least once volunteer for Seattle Hempfest-you will be impacted in unimaginable ways. For more info: http://hempfest.org/drupal/Volunteers
4. Attend a Pro-Cannabis event! Bring your friends and family members-especially those that would like to be better educated on the drug war and related issues. See the DANKinfo website for a list and once again, I must say (maybe I am biased) at least once in your life attend Seattle Hempfest-the third week of August. Check the website for it-there is likely a march planned near you—if not see #9
5. Support organizations such as LEAP, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php), where the proponents of changing the law are those whom have enforced it and seen the failures first hand. Methods of support include donating, volunteering, passing out fliers, attending events, passing on info, re-posting MySpace bulletins, etc.
6. Donate money to those organizations who are influencing policy change-great examples are NORML (www.norml.org),

Big Money in School Board Race is a Threat to Democracy
SEATTLE, WA. As of October 25, 2007, four candidates running for school board – Peter Maier, Sherry Carr, Harium Martin-Morris, and Steve Sundquist – have accepted $433,366. The total dollars raised by this slate is unprecedented in a Seattle school board race. But even more concerning is the extreme concentration of influence represented in the contributions. Seven wealthy couples have collectively contributed $223,000 to the four slate candidates. This means that less than 1% of the total contributions account for more than 50% of the total money.
Former school board member and PTSA board member Amy Hagopian explains that this marks a sharp shift in school board campaigning: "Since no contribution limits exist in the school board race, candidates have normally exercised discretion. This level of fundraising coming from just a handful of special-interest donors is a direct threat to the democratic process. The level and concentration of this patronage—particularly in a race for a $5,000 a year position—could easily amount to purchasing the school board."
