MARIA-Maria formed in 2003 in Oxnard. As the first 7" on the new YAY! label, MARIA released "Oh Victoria", backed with "I Remember What It Was To Feel" and "I Should Be Dead" in May 2006. With the YAY! Fanzine (YAY! 3, April 2007), came the 5": "I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts". The next 7", "Friends Forever" (YAY! 4), was released May 2007. After two years(!), a new single, "Love Is Something I Know Nothing About" (YAY! 10) will be out Spring 2009.
Catwalk-These young lads became a group during the summer of 2005. Fonted by Nick Hessler their first release was "Shiny Girl" (YAY! 2). Going through several line-up changes the group followed their jangly debut with the lush "Past Afar" single Spring 2008. The group is working on another 7" due out in the Summer of 2009, with a debut full-length to follow.
Pam and Teri-Yes, they really are twins, and yes they really are fabulous!! Pam and Teri Gartner come from Fillmore, on the eastern edge of Ventura County. Yes, they do have more than legal fireworks. Simple yet oh so sweet, Pam and Teri sing about their cat Lucy!! They have been playing occasionally since 2006. Their debut 7" was released November 2008.
Sea Lions-The newest addition to YAY! Records hails from the label's headquarters, Oxnard, CA. Bringing a fondness for bittersweet twee pop, Sea Lions are fronted by Adrian Pillado. Working on what would become Sea Lions, Pillado gathered a group by Spring 2007 that made their debut at Grady's Record Refuge in Ventura. Their songs of youthful longing are now available: "Lets Groove" (YAY! 8, March 2009). A full-length is set for this year!
The Tartans-This jangly, bicycle loving group is the first non-Ventura county group to join YAY! Full of soul and full of FUN, their first 7" will be came out Spring 2008. Based out of LA, we are simply thrilled to have them aboard YAY! Records. They have all you could ever ask for: boy-girl vocals, 6 and 12 string guitars, organs, a rickenbacker bass, and glockenspiel!! A new 7" will be out Summer 2009.
Watercolor Paintings-
Another sibling duo, Watercolor Paintings is originally from Thousand Oaks (Ventura County). Formed in the summer of 2006, Rebecca and Josh are currently based in Santa Barbara and active with DIY shows. Watercolor Paintings will be made their YAY! debut, “With The Light On” (YAY! 9), March 2009.

It is called O’ San Francisco. We asked Tiffany Lowe, granddaughter of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash (and daughter of country singer, Carlene Carter, and British rocker, Nick Lowe) to sing on the album. The top picture below is of Tiffany in the studio recording with us. The album is dedicated to a close associate of Black Angel who recently died who was a big Johnny Cash fan. We also have former Johnny Cash drummer, Danny Darling, playing on the album. We hope to be touring soon and we may be playing shows with former Black Angel singer, Audrey (Mrs. Ike) Turner. The bottom picture is of Black Angel playing at The Roxy in Los Angeles a few years ago with (left to right): Tomeka Haywood; me; Audrey Turner; and Ronnie Turner (son of Ike and Tina Turner on bass). We hope to be on tour soon so we would love to see you at a show.
