Based in Memphis, TN, The Yazoo Shakes are a family of musicians rooted in traditional Southern music and Blues and Jazz improvisation with an eye on heavy-hitting rock. As a band, they seek better understanding of music and life through the richness of their various musical sensibilities. They are lenses through which each of the others sees the world. Since 2007, The Yazoo Shakes have become a staple of Memphis music. They continually tour throughout the southern and midwest regions headlining note worthy venues such as Nashville’s Exit/In and Memphis’s own Hi Tone.
"The Shakes specialize in a gypsy-gusto sound that's propelled by minor chords and a Southern shuffle. One of the group's newer songs, "I Let My Country Down," is a sing-along battle cry, while "'H' is for Hammer" features an in-the-pocket groove that non-Memphis bands would kill for. Mixing culinary, movie, and musical metaphors, the Shakes' repertoire is the aural equivalent of the spicy ramen served up in Tampopo combined with the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink attitude of Babette's Feast. If you're a fan of Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, the Squirrel Nut Zippers, or the Asylum Street Spankers, your ears will never go hungry again." Andria Lisle, The Memphis Flyer, June 4-10, 2009
“The Yazoo Shakes are this bizarrely Memphis mixture of Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and Dr. John. They have the dark humor, storytelling and not quite-so-perfect vocals of Cave and Waits, and the soulful mix of rock and traditional Americana music that Dr. John captures so well.”

“This is modern music. This is the sort of music where there is no composer. It’s an extension of folk music...electric folk music with as much spiritual soulful expression as possible.”
