In 1665 an outbreak of the pandemic known as the Great Plague was responsible for killing 100,000 people throughout London. Also known as the bubonic plague, its cause was the bacterium known as Yersinia pestis. Formed in September of 2008, the Yersinia Saxophone Quartet currently resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan where they are pursuing various degrees at the University of Michigan. Since formed, Yersinia has performed at the Annual U.S. Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium held in Fairfax, Virginia. The quartet regularly performs throughout Ann Arbor and its surrounding areas as well. Establishing national acclaim, Yersinia won the Silver Medal at the 2009 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. All students are pursuing graduate or undergraduate studies in music at the University of Michigan where they are under the guidance of Donald Sinta. Members of YSQ are Robert Young (soprano), Zach Stern (alto), Joseph Girard (tenor), and Daniel Blumenthal (baritone).
