The Yorkshire Saxophone Choir was formed in 2001, and is based in Harrogate. The ensemble provides a specialist playing opportunity for experienced saxophonists from the Yorkshire region. There are 12 saxophonists in the group, with instruments ranging from the tiny soprillo to the huge bass saxophone.
The Yorkshire Saxophone Choir plays a diverse repertoire ranging from classical transcriptions to original contemporary works. Some of this music can prove hard to find, but we are very fortunate to have strong links with a number of excellent composers and arrangers. Although not wishing to list them all (due to the risk of missing someone out!), the ensemble is particularly grateful to Don Ashton and Philip Skelton for their enormous contributions to our repertoire.
The group is a chamber-style ensemble and is therefore not conducted. Although there are several saxophone choirs of various types throughout the country, we believe that we are probably the only totally independent choir of our kind in Great Britain. We are entirely self-funding, and have never received sponsorship in any form. All instruments are privately owned, including the extremely rare soprillo included in our line-up.
The Yorkshire Saxophone Choir has performed concerts in many areas of Yorkshire and has also participated in workshops and masterclasses both in and outside the area. These have included participating in an event at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. We have also had the pleasure of working with a number of professional saxophonists, including Richard Ingham, Andy Scott and Alistair Parnell.
