About me:
We’re smarter than Big Tobacco thinks. And now we’re spreading the truth—that smokeless tobacco isn’t the safe, convenient alternative the tobacco companies make it out to be. Let them spend hundreds of millions in slick ads. We see through the disguise. Let them turn toxic chemicals into sweet apple, peach, cherry and mint. Candy coating can’t cover their lies. They tell us to use it anywhere, that everyone is doing it. But we’re not that easy to fool, and we won’t get hooked on their say so.
We are not sheep. And we won’t be Big Tobacco’s next victims.
What is smokeless?
Smokeless tobacco products come in a number of disgusting and dangerous varieties:
- Chew: Looseleaf chew is tobacco leaf that’s cut into strips and loosely packed in foil-lined pouches. Plug chewing tobacco comes in small, semi-soft, oblong blocks.
Both are usually sweetened and/or flavored.
- Suck: Snuff is finely-cut moist tobacco that people stick between their cheek and gum. Snus products are small, teabag-like pouches of flavored tobacco that go under the upper lip. They both release nicotine into the mouth’s membranes.
- Snort: Nasal snuff is a fine tobacco powder, sometimes flavored or perfumed, that people sniff up their noses.
It’s Uncool
Sure, smokeless is popular. Like that guy who won Idol that one time.
Nothing goes over better on a first date than a hairy tongue. Smokeless tobacco coats your taste buds with chemicals, which cause bad breath and turn the little hairs on your tongue black.
Dentures aren’t just for old people anymore. And you’ll need them once smokeless tobacco shrinks and rots your gums, which loosens your teeth.
Drooling is hot. So is losing total control of your bottom lip because chemicals have deadened the nerves in your face. Attractive.
Everyone’s doing it? Yeah, right. Only 7% of Wisconsin high school teens use smokeless tobacco.
It’s Deadly
Anyone who says smokeless tobacco is “safer” needs a dictionary. Bad.
Addiction isn’t pretty. Smokeless tobacco can have five times the nicotine of cigarettes.
Like mouth sores? How about tooth rot? Smokeless tobacco can eat away at your gums, your jawbones, and even give you kidney and heart disease.
Smokeless tobacco users are 80% more likely to develop oral cancer, and have a 60% higher risk for pancreatic and esophageal cancer.
It’s Lies
Big Tobacco’s famous for trying to manipulate us. Only thing they do better is kill.
In 2005, the top five smokeless tobacco companies spent more than $250.7 million to advertise and market their products.
Killing old customers means you need young ones. Tobacco companies admit using candy flavors like apple, peach, berry, citrus, mint and licorice to lure new users.
From 1997 to 2001, one company increased smokeless ad spending in youth mags 161% (from $3.6 million to $9.4 million), even though targeting teens is against the law.
