PROUD CANADIANS ARE THESE YOUNG CANADIANS!

They are one of Canada's most dynamic Punk bands. A power trio in the most colourful sense of the word! Thier sheer contempt for mainstream music was echoed on their first single: ''I Hate Music'' under the name The K-Tels. Named after the cheezy company known for cramming far too many songs on a record and then slicing and dicing them to fit the ever worsening time constaints of the commercial industry. An apt roasting that earned them a lawsuit from said tasteless company.

Their music was high-energy with sharp social commentary about the North American system and the various way it manipulates. But their message wasn't such that it turned you off the music. Art Bergmann ( guitar, vocals ), Jim Bescott ( bass and vocals ) and Barry taylor ( drums ) created some the most fast, furious and fun music on the planet!

Check out ''Fuck Your Society'', ''Data Redux'', ''Hawaii'' , ''Well Well Well'' and ( of course ) ''I Hate Music'' for proof. The Young Canadians were together for less than 2 years, but ,thankfully, somebody, somewhere was there to capture their live shows, as well as their material in the studio fro their 2 EPs ( ''Hawaii'' and ''This Is Your Life'') and one ''bonus'' single that came with the ''Hawaii'' EP. They were one of Vantown's favourite bands. Unfortunately, they went their separate ways after a gig in December of 1980 at The Lotus Hotel in Vancouver around the time of the tragic death of John Lennon.

Art Bergmann continued with his music career with stints in the supergroup Los Popularos, Poisoned ( their 1985 EP has the original version of ''Guns & Heroine''), and ,of course, his solo career which included a rather disappointing re-recording of his ''Crawl With Me'' material with John Cale ( Ex of The Velvet Underground ), and later classic albums like: ''Sexual Roulette'' , ''Art Bergmann'' and ''What Fresh Hell Is This''. Art has been recently spotted in Calgary. Whether or not he will venture back into music for the first time since the late 90's is anybody's guess.

Jim Bescott, after a difficult existence following the Young Canadians demise, met an untimely death. Details of which I prefer not to get into.

Barry Taylor continued to perform his fantastic drumming feats with various bands decades later. Most notably eclectic Roots-rocker, road warriors: Roots Round-Up. He was last spotted participating in electronic music some time ago.

For those not in the know about the Young Canadians and their legacy, all their recorded material plus their break neck live performances are available on CD. A special Cd compilation was released on Zulu in 1995 and later re-issued by Sudden Death. Also: a Cd compilation of Art Bergmann's earlier solo material was available for a short time, courtesy of Chris Houston's Audio Monster label.

This myspace page is a valuable start that will assist you filling these gaps.

Some of the Young Canadians live performances are available on YouTube. Just punch in ''Vancouver Punk'' and go from there. Their video for ''Automan'' has yet to be released commercially ,but, has been aired on MuchMusic the odd time. Bug the hell out of them to play the real thing once in a while. ondemand@muchmusic.com Let's not take honest, innovative Canadian music past or present for granted. The Young Canadians are as good an introduction to the Vancouver music scene as anybody. Dig in! Have Fun!

The Young Canadians produced what will always be some of my favourite music. I only wish that I'd been able to see them live.

Thanks for the Add. Art Bergmann is Canadian music's best kept secret. Rock music today needs someone like Art and the Young Canadians again to give it a kick in the ass.
Cheers!
Jamie.

Call me a jaded old fart ,but, I feel a lot of the newer punk bands lack the character and the craft of bands like The Young Canadians. The Young Canadians ( at one time The K-Tels until the actual company treatened to sue ) actually wrote real songs that said something. It wasn't just window-dressing. Art Bergmann continued to write some of the most enduring rock and roll songs afterwards. Too bad this band can't re-unite. This would be the one I'd really like to see. The relative obcurity of this band is a testament to the continued gutless additude the Canadian music industry exudes on the poor, misguided masses.Fuck Your Society, indeed!
