The City Boi, born Jamal “J.R. Kennedy, has been through a lot in his 23 years of existence. Bred in Charlotte, N. C., in a neighborhood on the Southside of the “Queen City”, he experienced more than the average kid would ever fathom. The pain, City Boi has withstood is a compliment to his mentality, and creates a very powerful work ethic and perseverance to become the greatest at career goals he sets for himself. He's learned from his experiences and embraced his struggles and strife to use as motivation, ready to show the world his talent, and ability to triumph.
The City Boi has been consistent with his approach to the microphone since the astonishing age of 10 years old. Ever since holding this young age, he noticed his passion for blazing the microphone. Writing lyrics daily and arranging songs throughout his school years. In an independent magazine interview, City Boi states... “I feel like I’m the voice box for my people. I can take you to the club or I can take you to the hood.”
City Boi’s country swagger and lyrical style is very versatile. He can appeal to your average teen-ager, young adults, or he can appeal to the older hip hop heads regardless of race or creed. He is known for grinding in the streets and performing at all local clubs throughout venues in the Carolinas, City Boi, has the “Go-Getter” Attitude that shows his will to make it in this music industry today.
The City Boi intends to convey his message to the world that a struggler can overcome failure, and ascend to the top of their game. The City Boi is like non-other, he brings swagger and a one of kind approach to his inhabitants. The City Boi puts his all into his music, "I put my heart on the beat; I cry when I write about the trials and tribulations in my life, I’m a survivor …I put my blood sweat and tears in my music.”
