| About Young Corbett |
|
The band started in early 1999 after me and my two best friends decided we would start playing music together again – seriously this time. I had known Phil for about 14 years at that point. I had known Jason for about 20. We’d messed around with music before YC, together and apart, but we never really put too much effort into anything. Jason decided to switch from bass to drums, since we’d had trouble finding a drummer. We met Brandon thru some mutual friends. We liked him and decided to try to play with him. The first rehearsal went really well. We drank some beers and jammed or whatever. We just seemed to click, at least well enough to want to do it again. In Brandon, we had found a kindred spirit and we quickly became good friends as well as band mates.
We rehearsed three times a week for a year. We tried hard not to suck and we were fairly successful. We played many, many shows over that year. The shows were always rowdy and loose, full of camaraderie, beer, false starts and some jackass yelling “Young Country!” in between every song. Good times, good times.
We went in to record in the summer of 2000 with Eric Johannsen. We’d met Eric when he did sound at the Coco Club (R.I.P.). The sessions were really fun, and went really well. Unfortunately, the mixing of the record took forever because of some technical issues that forced us to re-record part of the tracks. Our schedules were pretty chaotic during this time as well and that delayed working on the record for long patches. Needless to say, that sort of took the wind out of our sails. We continued to rehearse and play shows, but we were frustrated at not having a CD. We also sort of hit a creative wall around this time. Jason suffered an injury at work in the spring of 2001 and was sidelined for about a month. He was ready to leave the band at this point anyway, so it was an easy exit. Gabriel Coan from Continental filled in for some shows that we had booked before J’s departure. He did a great job, but we struggled to find a permanent replacement.
With no drummer, still no CD and big changes in our personal lives, we lost steam and Young Corbett grinded to a halt. Then, the CD finally arrived. It was August 2001. In the fall we played one last show at the Bottom of the Hill with Gabriel stepping in once again. And with that, YC rode off into the sunset.
The Young Corbett CD is a nice little record, if I do say so myself. Well, it’s not too embarrassing anyway. We worked really hard on the songs and I think it shows. I can’t really offer an accurate description of the sound or style, so I won’t even try. Let’s just say that it’s a rock album that was made by four friends, who had a really good time making it. Now, maybe some people will actually get to hear it.
