Young Flo History
The Past, Present, and Soon to Become
A biography on John “Young Flo Houston” Flores by, Thomas Lara.
The world of hip hop, where every lyric is supposed to weave a tale of life in the streets, where criminals, pimps, hoes, and thugs thrive, is being watered down by fake gangsters and want to be thugs. John Flores shines through it all as an artist of 20 years past his senior, known as Young Flo Houston. “I’ve lived the street life for real” states the 25 year old Hiram Clarke, (Houston) native.
Like a thief in the night, the lyrical mastery of Flo Houston will steal the ears of hip hop heads nationwide. Growing up was hard for Flo Houston, whose grandfather was killed by the hands of his own son-in-law (Flo’s father) while he was only two years old. Moving past the melancholy in his life the future rapper got his start break dancing with his friends and realizing he had a knack for rapping for them, already having been an avid listener to the likes of “Cypress Hill”, “8-Ball & MJG”, and “2-Pac”. As years past he honed his skills and was ready to hit the market in the hopes of gaining the attention of a local or major label, a strong inspiration came from a local rapper of Houston made it big known as “South Park Mexican” (SPM), who became one of the most celebrated Mexican rap artist in the city. Not being a fan of SPM, but admiring the fact that he was successful, he thought to himself “if he could make it, so could I”. Being determined to not let his Hispanic heritage, and his poor background keep him from pursuing his dream, he would rap for whoever would listen.
By the age of 16, he had gone through the third of three major surgeries for Ulcerative Colitis. Because of the medication that was given to him (after second surgery), he realize he was beginning to die a slow death. He laughs now and says “I was starting to look like a crack fiend”. When his third surgery was a success, he immediately put his dream back on track by honing his skills as a hip hop artist.
He was starting to compete in local talent shows and he even won once. This excited young rapper and he soon realized he might have found his calling and a way out of the neighborhood, which by this time had seen the rise of “Big Steve (Mafioso) and other Hiram Clarke artist.
All in all his music comes from a real life experience of himself and those around him. You can hear the passion for music in every line he writes. When ask, what drives you he answers “Wife and kids, my past, and my future. Redd Tape Muzik and Lyrical Records will present Young Flo Houston, an individual who is motivated and destined to make a mark in the rap game. He has been working his whole life to become the next pioneer in rap music. The future looks Promising for Young Flo Houston. He wants to go above and beyond success, truly a “Hustler” by all means.
Before I left I interviewed him with four questions (his answers in blue). When did you first want to do hip hop for a job? 12 years old watching Bad Boy Records blow up, there swag tranquilized me. When was your first break? When I left my first Production Company and started doing everything on my own. How did you prepare for this while growing up? I didn’t it came naturally. How did you pick Young Flo Houston? Flo is short for Flores, I was young and Houston is what I’m representing. Flo Houston is now wrapping up the last perks of the critically acclaimed premier “American Greed”.
