"Young Governor exploded onto Toronto’s scene last week, unleashing two furious live sets in one night. Though this saw Guv’s debut as a solo artist, he barreled through a repertoire of intensely vicious garage-punk without so much as a breath. Guv’s pop-perfect crooning and aggressive fuzzy guitar fronted two different groups, one for each of his absurdly chosen venues.
Inside Blue Moon, Leslieville’s local stoner-metal-thrash pool joint, the exclusive and mysterious audience is kept behind a thick black curtain. I feel uncomfortably close to the tiny crowd crushed up against the grime and wood paneling, and some of us make nervous banter above the strains of Burt Bacharach. Guv takes the stage, punching out a powerful wall of filthy goodness in just under the fifteen-minute mark. I am sure to note the mysteriously stunning dame laying down dogmatic bass lines, whose face can hardly be seen behind her veil of dark locks. After the set I approach her to ask how she came to play with Young Governor and am shocked to find that she does not speak a word of English, but can only murmur certain pleasantries in Spanish.
Two hours later, the faithful audience has made their way further into the cavernous East to a park behind Memory Lane, overlooking the historical Leslieville Herb Garden. The oregano is especially pungent since the weather has started to get warmer. A few locals have turned up too, as I know Guv had hoped, but their interest seems predictably elsewhere. Nonetheless, Guv fires up again, this time with only one other member hammering out bass and drums simultaneously. This set proves to be even shorter (I doubt they made it past ten minutes), but the raw cut of the angular tunes keeps it fresh.
As we exit the park, we are each given a Loot Bag. Mine contains a fried egg sandwich, a can of Pabst, and some Popeye Cigarettes. I trade in my cigarettes for a subway map so I can find my way back home. God knows where I am, the East is a great gaping void of crack and confusion, but there’s no deterrent from the exclusive viewing of a Young Governor show".
