Acid Man
The new single by the Young Offenders was out in November and is 'Stitched Up By The Acid Man'. You can hear it up there if you like, and watch the video down there.
About the band "The band who make Babyshambles look like James Blunt. It feels a bit like an Arctic Monkeys show waiting to kick off." NME
"The Young Offenders Institute are representing something completely unrepresented anywhere else by any other band in Britain at the moment" Steve Lamacq
The Young Offenders Institute grew up together in the North Manchester estate of Collyhurst. They are still there today. Singer and rapper JP was the first to plot their escape route: The Young Offenders Institute. A filmmaker (Steve Price of Create Films) started following him and has been there ever since. See the trailer for his film here. Various members were recruited and left amid acrimony. One by one, JP's old friends joined up in their places: Chris Rigg (guitar/vocals); drummer Steve Basher and, finally, Alan Lamb (guitar/bass).
Flying in the face of conventional music business wisdom (not for the first or last time), they played their first ever gig at a packed Cellar Vie during the In The City industry convention in September 2004. The entire music industry was there. Many of them walked out in disgust after two songs. Those who stayed behind witnessed a seminal moment in rock 'n' roll history. Local heroes Puressence were singing along, as were cognoscenti nu rock 'n' roll bands Thee Unstrung and The Paddingtons. Producer Owen Morris (Oasis, The Verve, Ash, Electronic) was pogoing down the front and, days later, cancelled all other engagements to produce three tracks for them. Then he cancelled some more engagements while he recovered.
Steve Lamacq got hold of these recordings and, several Radio 1 plays later, declared on air "The Young Offenders Institute have come along to shake up what's become rather a smug indie mainstream". Northern radio heroes Terry Christian and Clint Boon agreed. As the buzz in Manchester grew, Tony Wilson launched his new F4 label, with one of the first releases being a one-off single by The Young Offenders Institute titled We're The Young Offenders. There followed a series of much talked-about gigs in the Manchester area. Next came triumphant performances at Reading and Leeds Festivals, and support slots with The Happy Mondays (one night, mayhem, the next, another triumph). See the Scrapbook section on The Young Offenders Institute website for JP's unique take on these gigs and more. Then a record deal - they became the first signings to The New Black Corporation and are set to release their first single proper, Stitched Up By The Acid Man, on October 30th 2006.
What do they represent? The rebellious underclass? Or just a band of friends trying to put out some great tunes and put on some great gigs. Whatever, The Young Offenders Institute are ready. Is the world is ready for them?
