Verb, the most prominent member of the trio Dirty Hartz, probably wouldn't be one of the top 10 rappers from Baltimore if you were ordering the list by sales or radio play. But in terms of peer respect and sheer jaw-dropping skill, he's No. 1 to many people in the scene, and for good reason. On records such as the recent mixtape It Is What It Is Vol. 2, Verb is almost a subdued presence as he barrels through punch line after punch line. But if someone hands him the mic at a show, odds are he's not going to give it up until he's ripped an off-the-dome freestyle for at least 10 minutes and there's no suspicion left that he's merely reciting prewritten rhymes. His battling résumé includes winning last year's One Mic tournament and being retired from 92Q's Tuesday Night Fights, and rumor has it there are some ciphers he's not allowed to compete in anymore because it just wouldn't be fair.
