Denim Boot Ponies (formerly known as Your Basic Blue Denim Boot Ponies) center around the songwriting team of JT Johnson & BD Jones and the recently added (2009) multi-instrumentalist DD Kapps. Reformed in 2008 after a nearly 20 year hiatus, the Denim Boot Ponies sound that had been hinted at in one of their earliest recordings, “I Found da Lord,” finally came of age and to fruition.
Denim Boot Ponies released their debut recording “Big Hats & Ultimatums” in January 2009. It is available at the usual capitalist enterprises, including amazonmp3.com, iTunes, Naptster, and Rhapsody, among others . Prolific song producers, the “Dagnabit” EP followed in the summer of 2009, and the “Git Mounted!” full-length album will be released by the close of 2009.
The Alt.Country/Psychobilly description comes not from any particular genre being more accurate than any other; they are simply psychotic hillbillies at heart. (Note: the term “Psychobilly” comes from a Johnny Cash song about working on a GM assembly line and a Cadillac coming home from work slowly in a lunch pail over the course of several years).
Denim Boot Ponies sound evolved from their original 1970’s punk bands back into their even more ancient country roots. The bad attitude of the early punk bands is still present. Evident in their music are the politics and topicality of Woody Guthrie, the sung-from-the-heart-and-through-the-nose “high n lonesome” style vocals of Hank Williams crossed with Johnny Cash with a dirt road struck in his throat, the layer upon layer instrumental tracks of a Phil Spector recording and/or shoot-out, and guitar parts that range from noisy to old-timey. The JT Johnson “signature” Rickenbacker guitar sound and solid rhythm and slide playing provide the anchor, with BD Jones’ more askew tremolo-and-tape-delay laden “country” playing providing counterpoint.
JT Johnson is the main music composer; BD Jones’ lyrics and blogs reveal a seemingly paradoxical combination of socialist and libertarian. Songs and blogs are released simultaneously at www.myspace.com/yourbasicbluedenimbootponies, and then commercially via Tunecore.
Inspiration for songs such include the right to organize into trade unions (“Dirt”)—the support of worker-run collectives (“We Only Want the World”)— the injustice of the capitalist system as evidenced in the homes being foreclosed upon in the USA (“Welcome to the Dustbowl”)—lust for power, political and otherwise (“Wanna Be the Man”), the psychosis brought on by war (“Locked N Loaded”), and psychosis brought on by capitalist economics and its effective isolation of the average worker from society at large and the rest of the working class (“Goodbye Song”)—and the suicide of Tennessee moonshiner due to excessive ATF zeal (“The Ballad of Popcorn Sutton”). It has been rumored that the number of Denim Boot Ponies songs that begin with the letter “W” is a direct result of the Bush presidency. DBP’s opinion of the former US President is described in “You Ain’t Cool,” in which “spinach” rhymes with “Kucinich.”
Aye, I think Thatcher still being alive and kicking reminds me of that old saying about "all good people die young", while the bloodsuckers and bastards live a ripe old age. Take Pinochet as a good example of this maxim. The old bastard died right befrore justice was to be delivered in an international court. And then there is Henry Kissinger as well !
Hey love the new music, send me mp3s of your music to:
bronxgael@yahoo.com
And I will play it on this new show I am doing "Plastic Paddy Prole & Roll"....if you can send the older tunes you sent previously, "Wah wah boo hoo" and "basically blue" that woud, be great too, as I goit a new computer and lost my old files in that old clunker, unfortunately that includes your mp3s
Sounds Great Boys! The Ga Pines are as few as two or as large as six. Although we're talking more about the six than actually doing it at the moment. haha.
DBP, Oh, I've got a freight train song! After watching the Country Music Awards, I don't know if any of the new stars have ever seen a train. Thanks for being our friend and visiting our MySpace page. We have
added the song, "Green Eyed Surfer Boy", which is a song about our late
producer, Ben Martin (pictured below), to our MySpace player. We miss
Ben very much and couldn't have recorded the "O' San Francisco" album and
several other albums without him. Have a lovely weekend.
DBP, "Stone Cold Sober" really rocks! I would much rather watch Beyonce or Lady GaGa or Christina Aguilera writhe around sexually to your music on MTV or VH1 than to their much inferior music. If Carrie Underwood was going to go toward rock music instead of country, she should do what you are doing instead of doing crappy rock music with a fiddle and banjo player in her band. Your music sounds a lot more fun, has a lot more energy and is a lot more in the tradition of great music like that of The Band, Bob Dylan and Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show than any music that I have seen on country or rock television stations in a long time. Best wishes and keep making the good music.
