Your Sound is a networking initiative dedicated to unsigned and independent artists, bands and DJs of all musical genres, from Scotland and beyond, allowing them to establish and develop a fan base, and gain exposure within the music industry. Artists submit their music, from which Your Sound, King Tut’s and DF Concerts promoter staff select the best tracks to form the soundtrack of the monthly Your Sound event, then the chosen playlist of unsigned and independent tracks are DJ’d in King Tut’s bar throughout the afternoon. Your Sound has been running at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut since September 2005, and is held on the first Sunday of every month at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow, from 4pm – 8pm.
Your Sound has evolved into a valuable networking tool for unsigned bands and budding industry sorts; it’s a great opportunity to meet new people, hear new music and make new collaborations. Playlist artists are encouraged to come along and hand out their own cds and promotional material, network with other musicians and fellow playlist artists, build their contacts, increase their fanbase, and make the most out of this networking opportunity. Professionals working in the music industry are invited to come along and mingle, offer free advice where appropriate, raise awareness of their own service, and network with fellow industry attendees and musicians alike. A guest DJ also plays a short set, made up of a selection their own favourite tunes and musical influences - a nice little addition to the afternoon, if we do say so ourselves.
With a recent grant from the Scottish Arts Council Youth Music Initiative, Term Four will see Your Sound develop by offering more opportunities for those involved – both in making music, and making it in the music industry. We are very excited about Term Four, as the current programme will be enhanced with the launch of Your Sound Academy; a Scotland wide tour, Your Sound - Your Place; and, the release of a Your Sound album. For more details on the Scottish Arts Council's Youth Music Initiative visit www.scottisharts.org.uk
As usual each month we will have an Artist of the Month and Two Runners Up. As well as having their tunes in the King Tut’s juke box, being featured on the King Tut’s and Your Sound website and myspace pages, from Term Four onwards the Artist of the Month will also be given the option to receive one to one training or a service for free, such as specialist legal advice, performance skills training, a PR campaign, or one of a range of services to help develop their musical career.
In November 2008 we introduce Your Sound Academy, which will take place before each month the main Your Sound event, from 2pm - 4pm. These themed seminars will focus on providing guidance on a range of subjects such as Marketing Your Band, Promotion, and Music Licensing for TV and Film amongst others. Places will be limited, with priority given to previous playlist artists, so please check the website for regular updates.
Remember, having your track included on a Your Sound playlist during Term Four has the potential of opening up lots of doors, as well as giving you the opportunity to meet lots of musicians from various musical genres and lots of people working within different strands of the industry.
