WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO ABOUT IT

***From Noel Tait- Kyle's Mom***
"My son Kyle was gunned down and shot at almost point blank range by a "sharp shooter" named Todd Sweet in the early morning of August 23, 2005.
Kyle Tait, of the Gitxsan Nation...Gone is a man who...was on his way to living a good life and had plans of graduating from high school, he had some good plans and took one last wrong choice. So, here I am the only voice Kyle my son, has left....
...I need your support, help me be the voice for someone who longer has a voice.
Come on all you people who have children, all you people who have had people missing, all you people who have had someone pass into the spirit world at the hands of the police.
Let us show them who we are and how we stand together, this is not right.
In the name of my son who has no voice, Kyle Tait, please come and stand beside me as this inquiry goes on, I need my own people at my side at this time! "

Jun 16 2007 5:22 PM

Hello Youth of the Peaks.

I hope all is well. The summer arts season is in full swing - maybe we'll run into each other at one of the summer outdoor art shows. I'll be at the Eiteljorg show in Indianapolis next weekend, Santa Fe Indian Market in August, and MAYBE Eight Northern Pueblos Market in July.

Subscribe to my myspace blog for news and updates (and my latest ramblings). The latest feature of the website is Native Art Travel - consider us for your next art show, business trip, powwow or vacation.

Be well,

Protest Planned for Controversial Ski Area's Opening

The controversial ski area, Arizona Snowbowl, will be opening Wednesday, January 24th at 9:00 a.m. A protest to draw attention to cultural, environmental and public health concerns with Snowbowl's planned expansion and snowmaking with wastewater will be held this Saturday, January 27th.
Demonstrators will gather at Flagstaff City Hall at 7:00 a.m.

On January 20th, as the ski area was preparing to open for the 2007 season, 70 mile per hour winds blew away much of the snow that had previously fallen on the mountain. In a recent news release Snowbowl representatives stated, "the wind continues to be our worst enemy."

Join the protest this Saturday!
On the first Saturday after Arizona Snowbowl’s opening day we are calling for your support to join us in a protest!

When: 7:00 a.m., Saturday, January 27th.
Where: Flagstaff City Hall (Route 66 side)
What to bring: Signs! Wear warm clothing!
For more info send an email to: stopsnowbowl@bust.com

sacred run; the way of people
SAturday, April 14, 2007 Four directions spiritual run

Yes!
It was a good day to be people of the sun.

Orlando and I arrived at Cal State Long Beach before the sun even began to show its light over the eastern horizon. Already there, waiting, was a man who was a member of the Tongva people (the first people of the southern CA coastline). He sat beside the small fire that was in the middle of their sacred burial ground which was on "University property". He was a curly haired, gray beard of man who was sitting silently when we arrived. The property was covered in grass and tall trees and was the only area nearby without clean cut lawn. Right as the sun was beginning to show at the horizon he began to sing a few songs in his language. And we were "saged" after which he asked us all to saya few words about why we were running. I spoke first and said that, as a raramuri/zapoteco it was the way of my mother's people because raramuri means "runner people". I went on to say that running is often over looked as a sacred thing. When we run we offer our sweat, pain and perserverence up to the creator as an offering. After everyone spoke. We gathered together to begin. The initial group of runners was mostly teenagers, a few children and adults. a few of the teens were from their high school cross country or track and field groups and a few were Danza types. The Danza runners were dressed in Danza attire, while everyone else wore basic running attire. Two of the adults wore Danza attire. We began the run. The run was a relay run with the legs of the run broken down into 2-4 mile stretches. The first stretch was run by everyone except for those who drove our support vehicles. from the university we went north on PCH until we reached Long Beach Blvd. From there we headed north to Compton College. The stopping points for the run were at high schools along the route. We went through Paramount, Lynwood, South

U.S. Federal Court Blocks Artificial Snowmaking at Resort near Sacred Lands

2007-03-12 | Sierra Club, Tribes Declare Justice Served
with Groundbreaking Decision that Protects Peaks and People

SAN FRANCISCO

Today, the San Francisco 9th Circuit Court of Appeals delivered justice to the sacred San Francisco Peaks and the Southwest tribes that consider it sacred by stopping the development of the Arizona Snowbowl Resort and Coconino National Forest Services proposed artificial snowmaking plan.

Sierra Club, various tribes and other appellants argued successfully that using treated sewage to make artificial snow would violate the environmental justice of the tribal communities and would pollute the land, air and water.

"This is a national wake up call for those that will try to desecrate sacred mountains like the San Francisco Peaks", said Robert Tohe, Environmental Justice Organizer for the Sierra Club in Flagstaff, Arizona. "We will not allow our voices to be ignored."

The San Francisco Peaks, north of Flagstaff, Arizona, are sacred to 13 tribes, and are important spiritual and geographic boundaries.

I am really thankful and deeply appreciate the 9th circuit courts decision, said Bucky Preston, one of the Hopi plaintiffs. Some of the judges in the courts must have a good heart and looked deeply into themselves to realize that the Peaks are so sacred to us and they understood our beliefs.

This overruling of a district court decision is one of the most important in recent years under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. In addition to finding that the plan would have desecrated this sacred area, the court decided that the U.S. Forest Service failed to fully disclose the risks posed by human ingestion of artificial snow.
