YR:0 was formed back in 2004, although the current lineup didn't exist until the following year. As an alternative rock project, "Year Zero" wrote Protecting Priviledge and Ghost, which would become the signature songs of the later incarnation. Thomas Carr, Nick Frost, and Scott Hobbs made up Year Zero.
In 2005, Serge Desjardins took over bass guitar from Nick, who focused on vocals and assisting with programming. Scott left the drumkit behind in favour of keys and electronic beats. The new four peice re-christened the band YR:0 and took on a logo that vaguely resembled the Khmer Rouge flag, the name Year Zero, applied to the takeover of Cambodia in 1975 by the Khmer Rouge. The idea behind Year Zero is that all culture and traditions within a society must be completely destroyed or discarded and a new revolutionary culture must replace it, starting from scratch. All history of a nation or people before Year Zero is largely irrelevant, as it will (as an ideal) be purged and replaced from the ground up. The band took the name as a element of the social commentary the band occaisionally touches on. The band also often used binary numbers in promotional marketing to add an element to the idea of breaking things down to their basics... or breaking them down into ones and zeros.
Musically the band mixes industrial, dub, and rock genres to create a sound unlike any mainstream sounds today. The songs are poppish, grooving, and yet decidedly underground. Vocally, Frost brings an edgy alternative feel, softened by melodic tones.
