“True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice.”
- Martin Luther King Jr.
Peace, Tension, but most importantly Justice. These three words sum up the core of Yukon Ho!. Whether it be the Peace spread through the crowd when they command the stage, the Tension of the dissonant guitar, the thundering drums, the commanding bass, and the eclectic horn line, or the Justice burning deep inside the hearts and minds of the members and fans, these three words hold sway over their music as much as the universe. Tapping in to the wide range of human experience, these five musicians charge forward towards progression and take no steps back. With pride they shamelessly make something more out of the less, fill in color to the average black and white, and spread wit and wisdom whenever they play.
Formed when evolution took hold of the T.J. and Chad Duo, T.J. Friga (guitar and vocals) and Chad Dennis (drums and sexy) recruited Andrew Schiller (bass and fro), Jonathan “Peaches” Speak (trombone and goofiness), and Chris “Mo-Fuckn’” Joseph (sax and style). Together they have formed a bond that took them from high school battle-of-the-bands superstars to successful local heroes, having one full length album and an EP under their belt and ready to release their first “real” record (as T.J. puts it). Their sound has transformed from indie-pop in the vein of Pavement to experimental rock music giving homage to Drive Like Jehu, and now their music is as diverse as it is progressive, making them almost impossible to categorize (Frank Zappa would be proud).
Their new album, which has yet to be named, is a non-stop aural assault (I’ve heard it, it blew my fucking mind). The influences range from jazz to funk to punk to afrobeat to prog to hip-hop, the list could go on forever. With songs topping nine minutes, it’s no wonder why Yukon Ho! brings great crowds to their live performances. Every show is better than the last and the set will sometimes go on for close to two hours. They never tire on stage, constantly pushing the boundaries of what they are capable of. Peace, Tension, and Justice, words that will define Yukon Ho! for years to come. Just check out a show to see what I mean, and don’t forget their epic war-cry… It’s the mother fuckin’ CHIMP!
