Yulia Musayelyan was born in Moscow, Russia, where she studied at the Gnessin Special Music School. After relocating to the United states, she graduated from Manhattan School of Music and New York University, with BM and MA degrees in Performance and Composition. She is a versatile flutist, actively performing in the classical, contemporary, jazz and world music genres. A recipient of the 2001 National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts Award and winner of the 2004 Lillian Fuchs Chamber competition, Yulia has performed and recorded with the New England Conservatory Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, Manhattan School of Music Opera Orchestra, and Hector Martignon Jazz Camerata, among others.
As a jazz flutist and improviser, she has performed at the 2001 Montreux Jazz off-Festival in Switzerland, and IAJE conventions in New York and New Orleans. She has recorded with artists of diverse genres: Marta Gomez, Marta Topferova, Vardan Ovsepian Chamber Ensemble, Fernando Huergo Quintet, and The Massachusetts Flute Choir, among others. She has toured the US, UK, Europe, Central and South America with various musical projects.
Knowing the importance of the composer-performer interaction, Yulia has worked as a performer with numerous students, as well as established composers such as Michael Gordon, in realizing contemporary music projects. In 2005, she was a soloist with the TACTUS Contemporary Ensemble with guest conductor maestro Pierre Boulez in the performance of "L'explosante Fixe" for 3 flutes, ensemble, and electronics. Her original compositions appear in the 2006 independent short film Natalie Bonn. Her chamber works have been premiered at the Nemoy Thalia Theater at Symphony Space in New York City.
She leads a jazz quartet and New Music Ensemble and performs regularly with the Marta Gomez Quintet, Fernando Huergo Quintet, Marta Topferova Trio, and Vardan Ovsepian Chamber Ensemble. Yulia Musayelyan Quartet's debut album "Caminos" featuring original tunes and arranngements, will be released in November 2009.
