At the millennium’s end Hip-Hop seemed to be spiraling out of control with a market over-saturated with disposable music and artists, creating a generation of listeners who’ve almost forgotten what true Hip-Hop sounds like. Enter Yung Texxu$, a native of Killeen, TX. Known for his versatility and keen lyricism, “Texx” reminds listeners of what Hip-Hop’s early Greats first sounded like. Texx follows a solid line of creative artists like OutKast, Snoop Dogg, U.G.K., and N.W.A. Having been compared to Jay- Z by “The Source Magazine” you can see why he’s been deemed “The Savior of The Dirty”. Having worked with the likes of Scarface to Kelly Rowland, Yung Texxu$ can spit over tracks with wide appeal for audiences ranging from undergound to mainstream music. For these reasons alone he is sure to be a major player in Hip-Hop for years to come.
Name: Yung Texxu$
Alias: Mi$ta Green, Savior of The Dirty, The UnderGround Prince
Darrell De'Angelo Contee a.k.a Yung Texxu$, was raised in the small city of Killeen, TX. He was introduced to music at an early age by his mother Kim Contee an aspiring artist herself. His father, Darrell Hovington spent the early part of Texx’s life serving a 10-year prison sentence, so the future MC was 11-years old when they first met. With his roots buried deep in the streets and music it wouldn’t be long before Yung Texxu$ followed in both of his parents’ footsteps. In middle school Texx became good friends with Michael Jordan, Mike Hisatake’, J.R. Scott, Scotty Lee and Spade, who would later form Killeen's Famed “Green City”. Spark Dawg later joined the group after returning from Atlanta. With a troubled past behind him including probation for breaking and entering by age 12, gang affiliation, and a failing interest in school, Texx made a decision that would change his life forever.
With his father being released from prison and in effort to be re-united with him and finish high school, Texx left Killeen. He moved to Dover, DE in 2001 leaving behind his mother, 2 sisters, and 1 brother. During his stay in the first state Texx met J.Lex (John Cannon) and Sluggz ( John Graham-Ramsaroop). They formed the group “Hustle Hard”. A year later, Texx be-friended a young Nishon Morris a.k.a N.I.S.H, and Larry Harvey a.k.a. M.O.N.E.Y, of the group “Ill Villinz”. Together, Hustle Hard and Ill Villinz released a string of underground mixtapes (Back To Ya Block, Operation Lock Down, D Boyz, Sin City) and in 2002 they decided to consolidate Hustle Hard and Ill Villinz into a single entity. One super-group, one movement thus, State City Music was born. In 2004 Yung Texxu$ was discovered by producer Rayza of Clubbalangg. Rayza had heard Texx’s Mixtape “Classic G Musick”, and immediately flew him out to ATL signing him on the spot. In 2005, Texx gained national exposure in “The Source Magazine” and went on to drop a slew of underground smashes such as “Drank in My Cup”, “I Gits the Money" ft. Big Hood Boss, Tum Tum (DSR/Universal) and “Still in Love with my Ex (Remix)” with Kelly Rowland. His work with D.J. Scream on “Believe the Hype” placed him at the forefront of underground Southern Hip-Hop. Since 2005 you may have seen Yung Texxu$ pop up in magazines, Hip-Hop DVD’s, or websites, but for now the rest of his tale has yet to be written. At many times Texx finds himself walking the thin line between the streets and music. Enveloped by the underworld he can’t leave and trapped by his obsession to ascend to the heights of Hip-Hop royalty, Texx is currently working on his debut album “The Underground Prince”, scheduled for release in 2009. Only time will tell how his saga will end...
" The Saga Continues.... Chapter 2 "
In February 2007, Texx was sitting in the comfort of his DE home, when the phone rang. This wasn’t abnormal, his phone rang all the time, in-fact that whole morning he had received so many calls he was about to turn the ringer off. However, he had to take this call, this call was special. He didn’t know, that this call would be the beginning of a new chapter. A chapter defined by mixed emotions, filled with possibility and promise on one hand and disappointment and doubt on the other. On the other end of the line was Supa Dave, his life long friend. He told Texx that Scarface was interested in the Group (Green City), And would be flying him to Houston Later that week. Incidentally, Scarface was in the gym working out, where a boxer who had went to high school with the group (Green City) was also training. Scarface began to inquire about the music the boxer was blaring. The boxer replied “Oh That’s Green City, They From My home town, Killeen, TX” Scarface proceeded to ask ‘Are they signed?’. “No” replied the boxer. ‘I need they’re Number!’, (Scarface) And the rest was History.
At first Texx didn’t believe it, in this Industry there was always talk, talk about this, talk about that, just meaningless talk. Texx was a man of action, so talk didn’t mean much to him. After the call, 2 days went by then 4. The memory of the conversation slowly faded. Then, It happened.
" Pack your bags, your flight leaves at 4:00 p.m. -Supa Dave "
Even on the way to the airport Texx was skeptical. “This can’t be real” he thought. The plane Landed at 7:03 central time. It was official, he was on the way to meet Scarface and the rest of the group. For The Next 2 weeks, Scarface had the Group working 12 hour days in the studio. The Title of the album “Brand New Money”. It wasn’t long before the group began to receive national press via, THE SOURCE MAGAZINE, XXL MAGAZINE, OZONE MAGAZINE, and numerous web-sites. The album was scheduled for release in July of 2007, Due to unknown circumstances, the album was inevitably halted. After a long hiatus Scarface was slated to release a new solo Album on Def Jam in December of 07'. As for Green City, The Group is Still together working on a new project, the 7 members are also pursuing solo careers.
" A Twist of Fate..... "
3 months later on the Sunny Beaches of Myrtle, South Carolina. Yung Texxus received another call. This call was from Jay Classik, he (Classik) sounded very optimistic on the other end of the phone. “Dj Clue wants to work with you”. All the way up in the big apple Dj Clue had heard Texxus’ single tearing up the under-ground, “Buss It Open”. Clue believed the single had a chance of becoming major success. It wasn’t long after, Clue flexed his industry muscle and had Yung Joc make a guest appearrence on the re-mix. All seemed well, as if the stars had finally aligned and Texx would get his big break. After months of pounding the pavement and internet campaigning. The labels didn’t bite. What piece was missing from the puzzle? Eventually, Texx parted ways with both Dj Clue and Scarface. However, in July 2008 that didn’t stop SMC Recordings from releasing the Lost Green City Project. Since then, Texx has remained independent on his own label, State City Music, making quality music for the masses. Over the years, Texx has garnered a huge fan base from all ethnic backgrounds and walks of life. The people identify with Texxus’ because both he and his music are real. A term often over used in today’s industry. He never shy’s away from the artistic and experimental aspect of song writing. He presents listeners with his brash, and often un-compromising point of view. Texx tells it how it is, and you either hate him or love him for it.
