At the center of all great movements always stand the visionaries. Those courageous individuals endowed with the gift of foresight and the ability to usher in a new wave of thinking. As in all facets of life with music there is no difference. Simply imagine what the Hip Hop world would be without the likes of brilliant minds such as Dr. Dre, The Rza, J Dilla, Mannie Fresh, Kanye West and so on. With that being said here stands an up and coming producer by the name of Yung Viz (formerly known as Visual/Vizual). Born and raised in Detroit, Yung Viz was captivated with Hip Hop from his early years on. Always a loner growing up, he would spend countless hours in his room watching videos he recorded from Yo! MTV Raps, Rap City and Video Jukebox and listening to tapes of Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Geto Boys, and NWA that he stole from his cousin and aunt. Though his love as a fan of the art form was evident, it wasn’t until hearing tapes from Black Moon and Wu Tang Clan that he knew he wanted to embark on his own musical quest. Captured by the soulful grittiness of the recordings he began writing his own raps to whatever instrumentals he could find, the first being from rapper K-Dee. He would keep this new found desire hidden until one day he found out that one of his cousins shared the same passion. At age 16, Viz and his cousin Pilot would come together to form the Universal Entities. Though their hearts were in the right place progression was slow due to lack of access to beats and a studio. Finally after pooling their money together they set up time to work in a newly formed studio by the name of Mo Tee’s that had just opened in the neighborhood. With a record they had hand picked to sample they sat down with the engineer who helped craft their first beat. Although they never touched any keys or pads they explained how they wanted each element and watched as the engineer brought the track to life. This led to the creation of their first song, “Violents” but more importantly it set off a light in Viz’s head that would lead him to want to craft his own tracks. Due to an absence of any equipment of his own and someone to guide him down the right path his desire remained stagnant until at age 17 his eyes were open. Already very proficient with computers he learned of and downloaded demo versions of some new music programs known as Fruity Loops and Cool Edit and began teaching himself to make beats. Time would progress as did his talent but it wasn’t until he met up with another local producer/rapper by the name of Killa Hawk that things progressed faster. Seeing the potential in Yung Viz, Hawk would add him to his crew, SLS, teach him how to use his ASR 10 keyboard/sampler and ASR X and better train his ear for digging for samples. With access to his equipment which also included an 8 track digital recorder Viz spent every moment he could honing his craft. He would go on to produce and record nearly 100 songs for and with his SLS crew. Unfortunately none of the tracks ever saw the light of day but the era served as the blueprint for his now relentless work ethic and ability. Soon after his work with SLS there came another stint with a group known as Freshmen Class comprised of Yung Viz, Pilot, Cardier and Caz Nova. Although the group eventually disbanded they were able to release a project entitled Class Is In Session, perform at various local events and receive a few radio spins and accolades for their song “Between Us”. By this point Yung Viz had decided it was time to put rapping to the side and go full steam on his own as a producer. Now fairly accomplished, he has produced for a wide range of local artists as well as having beats featured on Showtime, radio commercials, and national mixtapes. With years of experience under his belt Yung Viz now bounces between using the ASR 10, EPS 16 Plus, MPC 2000, Triton and Proteus 2000, but to most people’s surprise his favorite still remains Fruity Loops. That humble computer program that that started it all. As a producer his greatness lies in his ability to create everything from gritty street tracks to complex soul joints to up tempo club bangers. Dubbing himself “Mr. All of Thee Above” he never wants to be pigeonholed into one particular way of perceiving music. The near future looks very promising for Yung Viz and his Glow Kid Productions company. With singles solidified from at least 7 Detroit artists including T da Pimp, EVL, Tripp and more set to be pushed this summer, his own Eye Opener Mixtape series, and a full album with Quest M.C.O.D.Y. known as the Light Project that’s already being deemed a classic to those given a sneak preview, his name is sure to grow stronger and stronger as time progresses. His eyes are now set on attacking the industry and with a drive and range rarely seen he’s guaranteed to turn it upside down.
