Cama-I (Hello!). My father, Gilles Charette, was from Valleyfield, Canada. My mother Tasianna "Nurauq" Charette is Yup’ik from Kwigillingok, Alaska. I am the grandson of John "Cunar" and Jane "Nausgauq" of the Kipnuk Area. (Grandma was born in Umguumiut and Apa was born in a village no longer in existence near Kipnuk). My maternal great-grandmother is "Panigacungaq" and my maternal great-grandfather is "Assgulria". My paternal great-grandmother is "Aarnaquq" and my paternal great-grandfather is "Naulalria". My great-great-grandfather is "Aarnaquq".
About me: "Through my artwork, I make this statement"
Aarnaquq Cegg'artuq!
Who I'd like to meet: My Native American name is "Aarnaquq," which in the Yup'ik language means "The One Who Is Dangerous." So don't let my peaceful exterior deceive you...
I hold a Harvard degree in Education and Administration (A.P.S.P.). In 2001 I became a full time artist, making masks grounded in Alaskan Native tradition and Native American drums and flutes.
As an all-round crafstman, I also do pottery, printmaking, and flute design.
I've been privileged to be allowed to research the history of my Yup'ik ancestors at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, incorporating techniques and styles of traditional masks into my art, and adding to the tribe's cultural heritage.
This is a Alaskan Native artist owned and operated business featuring authentic contemporary Yup'ik art. I am a member of the Yupiit Nation in Southwestern Alaska along the Kuskokwim River, enrolled through the Bureau of Indian Affairs with the Alaskan Native 13th Regional Corporation.
All artwork on this site, with the exception of Smithsonian Institute and Portland Art Museum photographs, is the work and manufacture of myself, an Alaskan Native artist. My art studio is located in Baker City, Oregon just 5 blocks from the Blue Mountain Fine Art Bronze Foundry.
