songs about the mysteries of housework and nature… a hybrid of the sparse, ponderous landscapes of laurie anderson’s big science album with the more sensuous soundscapes of annette peacock’s i have no feelings or sky skating —yvette and zummo sound almost like ghosts throughout, and while the effect can be a tad drowsy at times, overall the duo-slash/trio can count this new exploration as a triumph. —mikey IQ jones, downtown music gallery newsletter
songs about the mysteries of housework and nature (persian cardinal recordings) is avant-garde music for daily living. songs about layoffs and lost birds ("the office"), trouble with concentration in a dirty house ("unruly place"), suburban corporate housing vs. marshland ("owings mills"), and the end of monarch butterflies in transit ("this migration is over").
the dark and dreamy song collection songs about the mysteries of housework and nature illuminates stories about obsession and a haunting preoccupation of defining oneself in the wake of mundane adversity.
yvette perez is a new york based vocalist, songwriter, keyboard player, and bandleader of two avant-pop groups h*e*r and birdbrain. her work is influenced by the effects of everyday industrial environments on personal psychology, women, and ambiguous identity. the milieu of oppressive crowded freeways, burning refinery flames, and car dealerships in the restricted home environment of an obsessive, agoraphobic single-mother of her southern california childhood permeates the stories in songs about the mysteries of housework and nature. this tradition continues as the overbearing brooklyn-queens expressway dominates the view and soundscape of her apartment in brooklyn, ny.
yvette studied jazz and avant musics at smith college with yusef lateef and roger reynolds while playing in local, western massachusetts rock bands.
perhaps the only adopted iranian with a mexican surname, racial ambiguity, identity and her search for her biological family and iranian roots play an integral part in yvette’s work.

yvette weaves these unusual stories into expressive music that defies traditional songwriting. she has presented her work at roulette, the stone, knitting factory, monkeytown, naregatsi art institute, red room collective, pete's candy store, montague bookmill, and many other venues.
h*e*r is a formidable trio with peter zummo (arthur russell, "blue" gene tyranny, teo macero) on trombone and danny tunick (arnold dreyblatt, band on a can allstars) on vibes. their sound is rich, dreamy, and sensuous.

H*E*R changes size to accommodate your needs, just like most women. yvette also plays solo and here’s what the good people there had to say about a recent performance:
"yvette perez knocks down the wall between performer and crowd with a method of singing that falls somewhere between performance art and the early days of patti smith" -- portland mercury
h*e*r (plus size) was born at the montague bookmill in bucolic montague massachusetts on july 5th. peter and yvette were joined by two charming connecticut musicians stephen haynes on trumpet and todd merrell on transmissions. the expanded group created even more luscious, expressive sounds.

yvette's other group, new york's premiere avant-jazz brass and percussion quintetBirdbrain will be back from hiatus later this year. rapturious horns and off-kilter beats. Birdbrain’s album i fly was a wfmu favorite and often compared to the likes of etron fou leloublan, rova saxophone quartet, lora logic, and the world saxophone quartet. Birdbrain is yvette's distinctive brand of pop music. the new version of the group will be yvette on vocals, peter zummo on trombone, michael evans playing percussion, darius jones on alto sax, patrick mccarthy on pedal steel guitar, and another mystery guest.
yvette also performs in peter zummo's fabulous noisy meditation band. the group has a revolving membership that includes the steady crew: ernie brooks (ex-modern lovers, rhys chatham, gary lucas) on bass, michael evans (alex hacke, god is my co-pilot) on percussion, special guest j.d. parran on reeds, and most recently david first (notekillers) on guitar. www.myspace.com/peterzummo

So good to be in touch, and thanks a million for befriending my alter ego! I like your "ooo brawny prawn" note. It's as if you were looking at a menu and it caught your eye, like, "Mmm, now /that/ sounds good..."
