Saving the Gulf of Eilat This vital, beautiful natural resource was under threat from pollutants and commercial fish farming. More than 2,500 tons of fish a year, raised in underwater cages, disturbed the ecological balance of the surrounding sea, spreading disease and causing direct damage to the coral reed and marine life.
Zalul's efforts, the most far-reaching "green" campaign in Israel's history and among the more internationally influential, led to significantly increased public awareness, community involvement and, finally, legislative action.
In June 2005, after more than five years of constant pressure, Israel's government passed a resolution calling for the gradual removal of fish-farming cages. This decision has far-reaching implications for international marine and coral reef conservation efforts.
Reviving the Kishon River Severe pollution in Haifa's Kishon River had reached lethal levels. Some 50 Israeli Navy Seals divers, who trained in its waters, died of cancer, and many more fell ill. Together with Navy veterans, Zalul mounted a high-profile campaign to clean up the Kishon and protect the surrounding community. The resultant public outcry, including mass demonstrations, persuaded local and national lawmakers to give the issue top priority.
A recent Zalul report on the polluted river banks forced the Ministry of the Environment to thoroughly investigate the damage and its future implications.
Rescuing the Na'aman River The Na'aman River, near Akko in Northern Israel, is among the country's most polluted - the result of routine sewage dumps by surrounding villages, municipalities and factories. Zalul's campaign led the Akko Municipality and several area industries to build new sewage treatment facilities. Zalul continues to monitor the area's rehabilitation.
Stopping the Sludge Shafdan, Israel's largest waste treatment facility (and one of the largest in the world) routinely spills sludge into the Mediterranean. Zalul's anti-pollution campaign involved thousands of citizens. As a result, alternative sludge-treatment methods are being implemented and the government has instituted legal action against Shafdan's former management. This campaign set an important precedent in Israel: "the polluters must pay".
