“When you want something bad enough, the universe conspires to give it to you.” - Paulo Coelho.
"I didn't think much of this saying I when first heard it," confesses singer/songwriter Zameer Rizvi, "but as my music career began to unfold, so did that saying. It was less than two years ago that I played a gig for four drunk middle aged men in a run-down Toronto bar. Some months later, I found myself before tens of thousands at the Skydome just around the corner. And recently -- on a cruise ship performing along with Grammy award winning John Mayer. It's nuts."
Zameer and his musical mentor and elder brother, songwriter Ali Rizvi, started out doing cover gigs in their living room as children. They would play air guitar on tennis racquets and lip synch to Guns N' Roses and Soundgarden tunes. A little over a decade later in 2007, the pair found themselves in a studio with 5-time Grammy-winning producer Steve Thompson, who mixed both Guns N' Roses' and Soundgarden's debut albums.
"My songs are my babies." explains Zameer, "I give 'em birth, which is usually a painful process, nourish them for years, develop them with the best tools, get them educated by the best teachers and don't let 'em out until I am dead certain that they can take care of themselves." His approach led to his debut single, Win or Defeat, falling into the hands of producer Steve Thompson, (Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, John Lennon, Madonna), who is acknowledged in the sales of over 200 million records worldwide.
Driven by his passion for music, Zameer spent eight months studying the mathematical ingredients of some of this era's hit music. His research paper, titled 'Auditory Scene Analysis of 20th Century Popular Music' was published by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University Of Western Ontario. "If you really love something, studying it thoroughly does wonders to quench your passion." explains Zameer.
Win or Defeat tells an inspiring tale from the eyes of anyone that has ever passionately followed a dream. The song’s powerful message asks people not to focus on societal definitions of success, but rather, to reach the understanding that success lies in the pursuit of your dreams. "If I defined my wins and losses based on societal perceptions, having lived in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and now Canada, I might very well have ended up a long haired opium addict holding a guitar, gun, and a Quran." Ali says.
"This song is especially for people that don’t receive due recognition for following their dreams. It’s for is for the cab driver with a PhD. The ball player that didn't make the team. The genius that failed out of school. The songwriter that was never heard. The busker on a street corner with better chops than Slash. The most qualified job applicant that couldn't speak English. The mother that quit her career to raise her kids. The child with Down’s syndrome. The black American in the 1960's. The Paralympian at the Olympic Games." says Zameer who thinks we need to change our ideas of success.
Zameer dedicates the song Win or Defeat to everyone that has ever worked really hard for what they believe in. To drive the meaning of this song home, Zameer will donate proceeds from the sales of Win or Defeat towards helping Canadians with disabilities to enrich their lives through sport. The music video for the song will be dedicated to building support for Canada's Paralympic Athletes. "I don't understand why the Paralympic Movement does not receive as much recognition and support as the Olympic Movement, even though the athletes work just as hard and have the same ambitions.” Zameer says. "I think finding the answer to this question will bring me closer to a better understanding of how to define my own wins and loses. I hope it does the same for everyone. That’s what the song’s about."
Zameer's love-what-you-do attitude towards his craft has not only made him a successful musician, but has also earned him a nomination for 'Best Independent Artist' at the Toronto Independent Music Awards. Zameer's efforts have been recognized by MuchMoreMusic, CBC Radio, the Toronto Star, Metro News, and Canadian Musician Magazine.
Zameer's debut album is yet to be released. Stay tuned to www.zameermusic.com for the most up-to-date news about Zameer. Thank you for visiting.
