I'm a PhD student at Berkeley studying how youth (14-24) use social technologies like MySpace as part of everyday life. I am invested in helping teens' voices get heard in contemporary society, especially when adult culture doesn't understand why teens do what they do. I blog about my research at apophenia.
Please note: MySpace is probably the worst way to reach me because of the spam and captchas (I'm apparently worse at them than robots). If you are actually trying to reach me, send me an email.
Personally, i'm a flitting social creature and a hermit, a geek and an activist. I like to dance, play Scrabble and goof around with friends.
I think this video is amazing and everyone should watch it:
Who I'd like to meet:
Mostly, i'm looking to meet people who can help me understand the culture of MySpace, especially teens, parents, critics, and researchers. I love hearing people's thoughts and reflections, ideas and frustrations.
Of course, i'm always interested in meeting new fascinating people. I'm still waiting to bump into my soulmate on a crowded street. Whoever that is, i'm sure they'll be complete and utter unadulterated trouble, enjoy absurdity and intellectual goofiness.
greetings and thanks for the add. I've been reading about you in the Australian media. Really interesting. My PhD is on music sector business models and one of the ideas syncs with your thoughts re online communities/tribes etc. Hoping to finish the thing this year.... maybe next year.... hopefully soon!
Thanks for adding me... I've been a fan of your blog for a while now... heh... it's nice to be able to cite another non-traditional academic once in a while. Cheers Charlene
You came to the Berkman Center yesterday. I was there, but had to leave right after.
If you're still in the area, look up tonight. Possible meteor shower.
Actually it probably doesn't matter if you're still in the area unless you've gone to the Orient somewhere...in which case look up right now before the sun comes up.
i've cited five publications of yours including "why youth heart..." in my honours proposal on interpersonal communication motiavations (comments) for using myspace (+ U&G). a massive help. :)
hi, i read a couple of your articles on while doing an lit review on the internet generation. I think its awsome that your actually apart of myspace society.
danah dear- good news. Almost done with the "thesis" and found out WCU calls it a "research report"- so I don't have to jump through hoops! Graduating 5/14 with my masters!!!!!
I found you when doing a paper on internet existentialism.
For somebody who does the work you do and whose web site links to myspace, I'm surprised you don't have a huge pile of myspace friends. I'm even more surprised that all of your comments aren't cleverly worded bits of myspacial satire.
Hey wait... Do you talk to your cat about catnip? You seem like the kind of person who would be concerned about feline nepetalactone usage. And is that a table, or some weird neural network prototype?
I came across your work recently, and was blown away by it. I am doing something along similar lines as you, but looking at how friendship and "Friendship" is formed and valued online.
