ZAPP String Quartet is an extraordinary string quartet specialized in playing improvised music, jazz, rock, ethnic music, contemporary music and all kinds of combinations of these styles.

Classical music has a long string quartet tradition, but ZAPP adds its own groovy way of playing and percussion techniques to it, which enables them to sound like a heavy rock band, a Bulgarian folk group or a bebopping jazz band for that matter.

All the members of ZAPP have a background in improvisation and they all compose or arrange music for the quartet. Additionally, composers from the Netherlands and abroad regularly compose for ZAPP

New Project: PECULIAR

In 2008 Zapp presents an American-Canadian program in which the quartet will play new exiting compositions (or arrangements) by John Scofield, Mike Keneally, Allan Gilliland, Brent Fischer, Mark Feldman and many more.

Arguably the most important now living Scandinavian composer also has a remarkable output for the guitar. I spent a couple of years working with the composer on this repertoire, spanning from 1973 to 2000, in order to embrace the emerging performance practice associated with his work. I have just uploaded 10 new tracks, all taken from "Tales From the North", my double CD box with the complete guitar works of Danish composer Per Nørgård. If you are an ambitious jazzgroup with young musicians you can inscribe for the Jazz Hoeilaart Contest 2009 until the 15th of may. The festival, which is organised by Muziekmozaïek in collaboration with vzw De Rand, will take place from the 24th until the 26th of September and is intended for young international Jazz talent. The 30-years old festival has its reputation for bringing international talent into the spotlights. Many known artists, such as Rosario Guiliani, Michiel Borstlap, Magnus Lindgren, Alexi Tuomarila and Robin Verheyen were on stage at this international contest. The 31st edition of the contest will open on Thursday the 24th of September 2009. Until the 26th of September six finalists will perform in a contest-formula. Each evening will close with performances of Jack Van Poll/ Jef Neve/ Bart Van Caeneghem/ Ewout Pierreux (24/09), Hijaz (25/09), en Cintia Rodriguez (28/09).
