I am heavily influenced by the yolngu playing style (hard tongue). However, I am not a traditional player in any form what so ever; I study this particular technique to use in a contemporary form. It sounds like...
I started playing this phenomenal instrument (yidaki), in the summer of 1995, in Los Angeles. I remember seeing Jamiroquai in concert in November of 1993 at the Brixton Academy in London, and instantly knew that I wanted some of that...
Back to L.A, I came across a player (Preast) who taught me the absolute fundamental in order to get me on my way. The following year, I witnessed the incredible 'Yothu Yindi' at the 'House of Blues'; I sat in complete awe from what I was listening and witnessing...
In 1997, I joined a rock band called 'Humanity' with whom I played in the L.A. nightclubs for a year. The highlight show being 'The Roxy' on Sunset Boulevard. In addition to this, I played a one off show with Ozomatli at the 'Opium Den'.
In 1998, I was fortunate enough to watch, and thank the incredible David B*a*a*i and the White Cockatoo performing group in London. An audience member with whom I got to meet, was the very man that started this ball rolling for me, Wallis Buchanan. I can only smile as the date was the 29th of October, my birthday; talk about a gift...
In 1999, I did a sound recording for the BBC, that was used in a television show. In 2000, I moved to Guatemala for two years teaching English, and exploring this lush vivid green land. There is something about playing above the rain forest canopy, standing on a Mayan temple in the Peten Jungle. Moving on to 2003, I recorded a cd in Barcelona, that was used as a demo focusing on a contemporary playing style. Upon handing a copy to A*a* Dargin, he passed it on to a friend, and said "lose this"... The following two days spent with this incredibe man, I will never forget; (R.I.P mate). The name of the cd was 'Blow Your Head'. Upon completion, I immediately discarded everything I knew, and focused on playing a hard tongue (traditional foundation technique) style to use in a contemporary form with the music that I grew up with. Since 2007, I have been continuously working on my debut album, 'Critical Paranoia', with 12 tracks already in the bag. This album will be complete in the summer of 2009; I have collaborated on 5 tracks with the amazing D.J. Tigerstyle (*Most of the yidaki tracks were captured on the first take, to give an unsmooth, blunt, raw feel) and the album will have a limited release of 500 copies. To this day, I reside in Mexico City where I study the techniques alone, using the tools provided, and the air that I am allowed. If I'm not playing, I'm painting.
Peace, Z.
