Von Smear Presents: Zelda Beats
In 2005 Von Smear set out to create a hip hop album heavily inspired by the amazing score Koji Kondo produced for "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past," released in 1992 for Super Nintendo. Since then, Von Smear has remade every song in the game with a modern electro feel that remains true to the original 16-bit sound. Roughly a dozen different vocal artists will be featured on the album, giving their own style and feel to the project.
“Koji Kondo is one of my favorite musicians ever,” says electro-futurist Von Smear. “’Link to the Past’ was some the most influential music I have heard. The repetitive yet melodic style of the original music works well for hip hop-style beats.”
Von Smear, a veteran of the whimsical-macabre, offers a twist on Koji Kondo’s often dark and urgent keys in a way relatable to all facets of this technology-driven generation: the coming-of-age to the settling-down, the underprivileged to the snobby rich, the south side of Chicago to the beach front of Melbourne, and everything in between.
The year, after all, is 2008. But don’t tell Von Smear and associates that. You might slow ‘em down.
