O grupo Zemer foi fundado no final de 1997, a partir de uma pesquisa enfocando as várias vertentes da Música Judaica, feita por seu diretor musical, arranjador e violonista Mauro Perelmann, em sintonia com o movimento de renascimento da música judaica que acontecia nos EUA, o klezmer revival.
Zemer, em hebraico, quer dizer canção, melodia. Uma palavra simples que para nós, sintetiza o vasto repertório musical dos judeus espalhados pelo mundo.
A música sempre esteve presente nas comunidades judaicas, tanto nos momentos de oração, introspecção e dor quanto nos momentos de alegria e comemoração. Espalhados pelo mundo, os judeus absorveram influências culturais de várias regiões, desde a Península Ibérica medieval, a Europa Oriental, países árabes como Iêmen e Marrocos até chegar à América e finalmente na nova velha pátria Israel.
Nosso repertório tem como eixo principal a música tocada pelos judeus da Europa Oriental em suas festas e comemorações, a música klezmer. Klezmer é a contração das palavras hebraicas kli zemer, (instrumentos de melodia) e designava o músico judeu da Europa Oriental. Hoje em dia, é o termo usado para designar a música oriunda dos judeus ashkenazim, que engloba também as canções ídishes do teatro judaico. Além de klezmer, apresentamos canções do repertório dos judeus sefaradim (que habitaram a Península Ibérica, até o século XV) cantadas em ladino. E por fim, músicas em hebraico, influenciadas pela sonoridade oriental criada em Israel, pelos imigrantes orientais (marroquinos e iemenitas).

The Zemer ensemble was created at the end of 1997, synchronized with the re-awakening of the Jewish music that happened in the USA, the klezmer revival. Zemer, in Hebrew, means song, melody. A simple word that, for, us, resumes the vast musical repertoire from the Jews that are spread all over the world.
Music has been always present in the Jewish communities, in their prayers, introspection and pain moments, as in the joyful and celebration times. Spread all over the world, the Jews had absorbed cultural influences from all kinds of places, such as the medieval Iberian Peninsula, Oriental Europe, Arabic countries as the Yemen and Morocco, until they got in America and finally back to the old country Israel.
Our repertoire has, as its main issue, the music that was played by Jews from the Oriental Europe at their feasts and celebrations, the Klezmer music. Klezmer is the contraction between two Hebrew words, kli zemer, which meant “vessel of songs”. It was used to design the Jewish musician from Oriental Europe. Nowadays, it is also the term used to mean the music that comes from the Ashkenazim Jews. It also means the Yiddish songs that come from the Jewish theater. Besides the Klezmer, we will present songs from the Sephardic Jews (the people that lived in the Iberian Peninsula until the XV Century) usually sung in Ladino. And at last, music in Hebrew, which suffered influences from the oriental sonority created in Israel, by the oriental immigrants (people from the Yemen and Morocco).
