The folkloric ensemble Zemplín has right from its beginnings been an amateur artistic group, representing the dancing, musical, and artistic culture of Eastern Slovakia, particularly that of the Zemplín region. It is motivated in its work by an endeavour to preserve, enrich and rediscover the cultural values of folk artistic work, to stylize musical and dancing folklore, to produce original works inspired by folklore, to promote an educational impact through concerts and public performances, as also to participate an various contests of artistic activities. Through its intensive work right from its foundation on December 10, 1957 down to the present days, the ensemble Zemplín has permanently entered the cultural consciousness of the Slovaks as a foremost representative of the Zemplín folklore.
The systematic training, educational and artistic work on the part of the group and all its members is steadily oriented towards improving the artistic and technical standard of each one of its programmes. The result of such efforts were 17 premieres. The Ensemble Zemplín has thus come to be a fountainhead of inspiration, or a model for setting up numerous such groups in Slovakia and their work. An inseparable part and parcel of its work is also collection activity and indeed, foremost personalities in Slovak art - e.g. composers, choreographers and authors - have drawn on its rare stocks for inspiration.
Zemplín has shown our art in 24 countries on four continents of the world. Today's cast of the ensemble spells seven generations of dancers, musicians, singers, choreographers and lovers of folklore who have helped this amateur body to grow in its exquisite art and popularity.
