Zenaida Santiago-Mirza comenzó su carrera musical a una edad temprana en Youngstown, Ohio. Siendo sus padres puertorriqueños, Zenaida creció en un hogar bilingüe donde empezó a cantar y a escribir canciones en inglés y en español desde muy temprana edad.
Desde su niñez, Zenaida supo tener pasión por la música. A la edad de dos años, ya cantaba en las ferias, acontecimientos especiales en la iglesia, y en programas de televisión con su hermana mayor Mary Ann. Ambas también cantaban frecuentemente con el grupo “La Riqueña”, un grupo coral infantil. Zenaida continuó cultivando su talento musical durante su educación primaria y secundaria participando en conciertos, concursos musicales escolares, y toda actividad musical escolar donde con frecuencia obtuvo los primeros lugares.
Años después, su pasión por la música la vinculó a un grupo coral durante su educación preparatoria universitaria. Siendo adolescente, fue elegida para ser parte de un grupo selecto de doce estudiantes de todas las escuelas de la ciudad de Youngstown combinadas: “Youngstown Connection.” Cantando con el grupo coral “Youngstown Connection”, Zenaida tuvo la oportunidad de participar en muchos programas musicales importantes en Los Estados Unidos de América y en Europa. Ella ha participado cantando en el Desfile de Macy*s, también con el grupo América Canta durante el espectacular del cuatro de Julio, en el Quingentésimo aniversario del descubrimiento de América por Colón en España, y el Quincuagésimo aniversario de la celebración del Día-D de la Segunda Guerra Mundial en Normandía, Francia.
Después de graduarse de la preparatoria, Zenaida estudió voz clásica y ópera en Youngstown State University. A través de su carrera universitaria, ella continuó cultivando su talento musical natural aprendiendo a cantar en varios idiomas incluyendo francés, italiano, y alemán. En su año final en la universidad, Zenaida viajó a Italia y a Austria para participar con el grupo “Dana Chorale”, el conjunto vocal de la universidad internacionalmente conocido.
El enfoque musical actual de Zenaida está es su nuevo álbum: una mezcla de música pop, rock, jazz, y salsa. El álbum de Zenaida revela que ella no solo es una ejecutante experimentada y músico natural, sino también una compositora dotada. La letra de sus canciones ha sido inspirada en experiencias propias y emociones cotidianas.
Zenaida creé firmemente que la música es un ente hermoso capaz de mover, energizar, y alimentar el alma. Así, movida profundamente por la muerte de su querida madre, Zenaida escribió la canción titulada “Hoy”. Esta canción es una reflexión sobre lo que alguien tiene que enfrentar en la vida y seguir adelante a pesar de la pérdida de un ser querido.
La música creada por Zenaida tiene una calidad universal: esa calidad empática la conecta con su público compartiendo emociones y experiencias comunes. Ella creé que la música debiera tocar el alma individual e inspirar a la gente a dar lo mejor de si misma. Zenaida Santiago-Mirza began her career in music at an early age in Youngstown, Ohio. Born to Puerto Rican parents, Zenaida grew up in a bilingual Spanish household and began singing and writing songs at an early age.
Even as a little girl, Zenaida knew she had a passion for music. By 2, she was performing at various fairs, church events and television shows with her older sister MaryAnn. The two sisters also regularly performed with La Requeña, a children’s choral group. Zenaida continued to enhance her talent for music throughout grade school by taking part in concerts, events and school talent competitions, where she frequently won top prize.
Zenaida performed in choir and chorale throughout high school. As a teenager, she was chosen to be part of the Youngstown Connection, a select group of twelve students from all of the Youngstown City Schools combined. While singing with the Youngstown Connection, Zenaida had the opportunity to perform at many high-profile events in the United States and abroad. She has performed at the Macy’s Day parade, the Fourth of July Spectacular with the America Sings group, the Quincentennial of Columbus’ Discovery of America in Spain and the 50th Anniversary of the D-Day Celebration of the Second World War in Normandy, France.
After graduating high school, Zenaida studied classical voice and opera at Youngstown State University. Throughout her college career, she continued to cultivate her natural musicianship by learning to sing in several languages including French, Italian and German. In her final year at Youngstown State, Zenaida traveled to Italy and Austria to perform with the Dana Chorale, the university’s internationally-respected vocal ensemble.
Zenaida’s musical style is a blend of pop, rock, jazz and salsa, and her album reveals that she is not only an experienced performer and natural musician, but also a gifted songwriter. Finding inspiration through her own life experiences and personal emotions, Zenaida believes that music is a beautiful thing that moves, energizes and soothes one’s soul. Deeply moved by the passing of her mother, Zenaida wrote “Hoy,” which reflects on overcoming the tragic loss of someone that will never return to you, but knowing life must continue on.
Zenaida’s music has a universal quality that connects to her audience through familiar feelings and experiences. She feels that music, unlike like any of the arts, has the ability to take you back and recreate the feelings and emotions felt at a particular time. She believes that music should touch one’s soul and inspire people to give their best. As heard in her new album, Zenaida’s work is the embodiment of her musical philosophy.
