Sounds Like
A mixture of Blues and Jazz with a little Rock, a little Soul, a tad of Country and a lot of Boogie!
Led by songwriter/singer/keyboardist Robert Linden, Zen Boogie packs a potent wallop for a quartet of jazz, pop, blues, and, of course BOOGIE players. The style of the band comes directly from the divergent influences of its players.
Robert's original tunes (laced throughout with his sardonic humor) are thoughtful, fun, and quite unique. The songs of others that they cover are definitely styled with Zen Boogie's own musical flavors.
Former member and now (since his move to Austin Texas) occasional guest, David Box wails on sax. This SoCal boy's influences are so wide-ranging that what ultimately comes out absolutely kicks ass. David and Robert met at a party where they were both playing and there was an instant musical connection. Now ZB looks forward to his next LA trip!
Bob Helfant is a jazz guitarist with an edge. He has played in original ensembles ranging from Rock to Country to Folk. In addition to playing guitar, Bob has written most of the material in his previous bands and toured extensively before becoming a fixture of the New Your City music scene, regularly performing at Trax, J.Ps., Brandy’s and The Other End. Bob has worked with Paul Shaffer, John Belushi, Elliot Randall, Donovan, Melanie, and recorded a solo album for Ko Tai Records in Canada. Recently Bob has played on the soundtrack CD for the Los Angeles production of Jesus’ Younger Brother.Robert is enjoying what Bob is bringing to the band not only with his fingers but with his voice.
Bob Ryman has not only brought his Bass to the band, but his violin as well. With both Jazz and Country influences, his playing adds a new layer to Robert's songs. He sings both backup vocals as well as an occasional lead.
Jeff Oliver and Robert go back a-ways. Jeff plays drums like he's sending a message to the next village... and he ALWAYS gets a response!
The band plays mostly in the Southern California area, but makes itself available for special road trips once or twice a year.
A special thanks to L.A. super-photographer Bill Rich for a lot of the great photos dispalyed on the site. If it looks cool, it was probably Bill's.

Zen Boogie, You guys rock! Thanks for visiting our MySpace site and being our new friend. We hope that all is well in your life. Black Angel will be releasing our third album in two years in early April, 2009. It is called "O' San Francisco". We asked Tiffany Lowe, granddaughter of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash (and daughter of country singer, Carlene Carter, and British rocker, Nick Lowe) to sing on the album. The top picture below is of Tiffany in the studio recording with us. The album is dedicated to a close associate of Black Angel who recently died who was a big Johnny Cash fan. We also have former Johnny Cash drummer, Danny Darling, playing on the album. We hope to be touring soon and we may be playing shows with former Black Angel singer, Audrey (Mrs. Ike) Turner. The bottom picture is of Black Angel playing at The Roxy in Los Angeles a few years ago with (left to right): Tomeka Haywood; me; Audrey Turner; and Ronnie Turner (son of Ike and Tina Turner on bass). Please check us out when we come to your town.

T'is not just a season, but it is the beginning. We are evolving and growing and becoming. We are going to make changes and honor within the goodness around us and inside us and then... We will generate this energy and surround our soul with all that makes us feel happy and whole.
And with this we share, with others of like mind, honoring all that is gentle and kind. We'll surrender the negative and with this be true, to a Happy New Year, as change has become due. We will address any problem and develop a solution, and we will move forward with Zen Evolution.
Happy 2009!
