I started music at a very young age. I did musicals play: “The French Revolution” “Les Miserables” when I was 11. “Edith Piaf” “Boris Vian” “Jack Brel”…. I always liked to sing. But I started as an actress.
Can you tell us about your new album?
This album has a trip-hop vibe with a touch of English pop. It’s totally different from my previous one. The theme of that album is “ What the new seed became!” So it’s very personal! It talks about who I am very deeply and what are my concerns! It’s very simple too and we worked in a very precise way. Like life should be!!!
It talks about all that can happen in your mind! Which sometimes you don’t always control! But so easy to control if you pay attention of who you really are!
The music is very simple with catchy melodies. Something you could remember easily.
Tell us about Cyril Morin, what did you do with him?
I co-wrote the album with Cyril Morin. There’re two songs in the album that he already had and I just loved them! “Empty Spaces” and “One More Day”. He has a very accurate knowledge of what trip-hop is. I like his sound a lot!
He totally produced the album, I sometime gave my opinions but I tried to stay away from my old habits and patterns to make that album sound different and new.
And working with Cyril was intense but good at the end. I learned how to trust “others” He is a good “singer-driver”. I learn a lot working with him!
Who are the musicians you are working with?
Well I have my band here in L.A. they are my family the best musicians ever: Amir Efrat at the keys, Vivi Rama at the bass, and Ahu Cansenven at the percussions And Sirsa. She is a singer songwriter and I always write with her. We played together a lot and I like having her input in my work. She has a great voice!
We all played together for almost 5 years now! They are the best people. And my best friend, I love them, and on top of that they are very good musicians. Amir toured recently with “Air Supply”, and Vi toured with “Will I Am” and now with “Macy Gray”.
Karen Teperberg who toured with Disney artist “Jessy Mac Cartney” will do all the drums section.
As you can see it is a 99% a girl band!
Who are the musicians in Paris?
Well a great team of musicians brought by Cyril in Paris is working on this album too:
Arnaud Gauthier did all the premix with Cyril Bruno Mercére will do all the final mix and masterizing. Xavier Seulmand will do some “club-remixes”
What is your schedule now?
I am organizing the promotions and the up coming shows. Lot of work to do now! It’s just the beginning.
2009 About Zera Vaughan...
I make music that's relaxing, but speaks to another level of consciousness...
I was born in Tunisia and raised between two cultures; the local and the European. My father, an English born painter, loved American jazz. I remember one hot summer night, when he first played me Ella Fitzgerald, I fell in love with the beauty, the details and the simplicity.
For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to sing and act. When I was ten years old, my parents enrolled me in the Tunisian Music Conservatory. I studied classical music, ballet, opera and middle eastern music.
During high school, I was acting professionally and landed my first role (the lead role) in a short film called "The Mask" which was interesting to me because its message about freedom.
Later, I performed in several plays and musicals including, "The French Revolution", "Les Miserables" and "Jack Brel".
I also started singing American pop standards and blues songs in nightclubs and began soaking up international sounds that would eventually inspire my music... Sting, Peter Gabriel and the jazz influences of Ella Fitzgerald and Sara Vaughan (no relation).
I moved to Paris when I was twenty to study music at the Paris Music Conservatory and psychology at The Sorbonne. While there, I worked as a session singer, providing back-up vocals on various albums.
I was still singing American pop songs, but began working on my own music. A vacation to London introduced me to Tricky, Portishead and Massive Attack. The dark, relaxing sound of trip hop provided yet another building block for the music I had been hearing in my head. So, when I started arranging, I had a techno, trip hop sound, but with the oriental sounds I had loved growing up. And thus became my first album, "Back To the Roots".
A couple of years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting famed French producer/composer Cyril Morin and we hit it off immediately. Cyril has a great ear and it just seemed natural that we'd end up working together. We started recording in the summer of 2008 and because ideas were coming so quickly, we finished "The New Seed" in record time. I chose that title because the word Zera means "seed" in Hebrew. When you plant a seed in the soil, it becomes a tree. Imagine the potential power of that one seed... we all come from a single seed and we all have that energy and power.
Hey what's up, it's been a while... I'm spending a lot more on facebook lately. Let's get to know each other better. Send me a friend request there. We can hang out, chat, network... all that good stuff!
