NOTE - if you are "streaming" the audio showreels, the audio quality will be very poor, with distorted treble and "space monkey" artifacts. This is due to the nasty MP3 algorithm Myspace use. If you download the files, the audio quality is much higher.
Zero Interference is a recording studio in Bowen Hills, a suburb close to the CBD in Brisbane.
AIM - to provide bands in Queensland with the gear, acoustic space, and expertise to make credible recordings that get them noticed.
To achieve this, the studio offers recording, mixing and mastering services.
On the recording front, the studio is designed to capture and enhance the excitement of the band playing live. A large naturally ambient "live" room with high ceilings allows the band to set up and play together, as they would in the rehearsal room or onstage. This avoids the sterile and disconnected sound that comes from the common practise of individually overdubbing the band's parts.
Analog tape is used to capture the raw energy of the performance.
Non-destructive editing and selection of the most exciting parts is achieved by transferring the recording to digital.
When it comes to mixing, the control room at Zero Interference is designed to let the band hear only what is coming out of the speakers. The walls follow the "non-environment" approach to control room design, absorbing rather than reflecting sound. The result is a more objective mixing environment, with mixes translating better to real world environments.
Zero Interference can also benefit bands who choose to record at home yet seek a professional sound. By bringing their project in to mix at the studio, the band takes advantage of more accurate monitoring, a wider palette of sound altering tools, as well as the experience of engineer Bryce Moorhead. The band can achieve results that hit above the limitations of their gear, acoustic space and knowledge.
The final stage of the recording process is mastering. This is where the songs which make up the release are standardised, so that the listener needs not make any adjustments to their stereo while playing the album back.
Traditional mastering facilities charge 5 to 10 times more per hour than the actual recording facility, resulting in a situation where the mastering can sometimes cost more than the recording! Given that, subjectively, mastering only makes 5% - 10% difference to the final recording, Zero Interference offers a mastering service at the same rate as recording. This allows bands to channel more of their limited funds into areas where they can make a greater impact on the listener - the recording and mixing.
just to let you know, i have my own magnet dart set in my lounge room, inspired by yours truly. My daughter likes it but she thinks my head is a magnet sometimes and it hurts a little. Our album is pressed, sounding trim taught and terrific. Thanks Bryce, if Matt hasn't dropped a copy in to you I will get you one there next week. Good work mate, carry on. Jim
Down from Cairns for the weekend, Hanimex Stand plays the Tongue & Groove Bar in West End this Friday night 6 June with The Pony Teasers and the Lords of Wong. We’d love to see ya there!
