| Influences | Well, I'm 44, so I have way too many influences to list here. I'm grateful that my parents were into rock n roll and a variety of music, not too much country. So, I grew up listening to Elvis, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, The Righteous Brothers, and a ton of other stuff.
AM radio was much more diverse in the 60's & 70's. All different styles of music were played on the same station... from Johnny Cash to the Stones. Eventually, FM radio became the popular format for music and stations began to condense their playlists into more specific genres and listener tastes. Later in the 70's I began to be more interested in 'album rock' and started paying more attention to what my older siblings and friends were listening to.
So I guess I'll just list a bunch of bands and artists in no particular order and definitely not complete...
The Beatles, The Who, David Bowie, Elton John, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, The Doors, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower, Alan Parsons Project, Pink Floyd, Queen, Styx, Kansas, Rush, Dire Straits, Frank Zappa, Van Halen, Pat Travers, Judas Preist, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, U2, Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Chili Peppers, Kings X, Dream Theater, Kenny Wayne Sheperd, Sound Garden, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails, Staind, Incubus... and on and on... |
| Sounds Like | Me... My music sounds like my music. It's strange... whenever I listen to music, I always have this tendency to compare it to something else I've heard. But when it comes to my own music, I don't know who I sound like. I have a lot of influences that sort of blend together in different ways. Each of my original songs seems to have a different style. It was hard to choose a genre to list myself under. Maybe I'm just that diverse in the types of music I like, or maybe I just haven't established an identity.
It's much different when you're doing this all by yourself than when you're in a band. Even though one person is playing all the instruments, writing all the songs, in my case anyway, each song has a different personality. When I was in a band called 'the end,' we mostly played cover tunes, yet, the group had a very distinctive sound and style.
If anyone would like to comment and tell me who they think I sound like, it would be interesting to know who I'm compared to. |
