About me:

No need to book, just turn up! (The screen printing workshop is booked up, but the other workshops should be fine). Looking forward to seeing you all there! p.s. there's an article about Zine Fest in this month's Plan B magazine and a post over at http://downthetubescomics.blogspot.com/2009/01/zinefest-focuses-on-comics.html#comments - a site looking at Britsh Comics. x

Zines are hand-made magazines made for love not money. Requiring few resources to self-publish- just a pen, a piece of paper, and a photocopier- zines are produced on any number of topics and showcase culturally innovative writing and art. Basically, they rock.

ZINE FEST 2009: PROGRAMME

Saturday 24th January 2009, 12-4pm, Free

The Women's Library, 25 Old Castle Street, London

12-1.30pm Self-publishing 101 (seminar room)

A hands-on introduction to making your own zine and comic with fabulous tips from Anna-Marie and Phoebe Pamflet, Bill Savage, Karrie Fransman & Jay Bernard. After the intros, we'll make a page for a collective workshop zine!

12- 2.15pm Screen Your World -Printing Desire (activities room)

Gosia will introduce you to the wonderful world of screen printing: making your own frame and light exposure table, and preparing your work space and picture to screen. You'll also print something yourself! Materials provided- but bring along a t-shirt if you wanna wear your designs!

15 places max- please book your reservation at the reception on the day.

P.S. this workshop isn't suitable for children, but they & their adult companions are welcome to screen print something with Gosia after the workshop!

1.30-2pm and 2-2.30pm Zine Tour (meet at reception)

Take a tour round the Between the Covers magazine exhibition and check out the library's own women's zine collection with some lovely staff from the Women's Library

1.45 - 2.30pm History of Queer Zines (friends room)

A visual exploration through the history and current climate of DIY queer zines. The workshop will investigate why queer creativity and zine writing -- along with counter culture, gender, race and feminist issues-- are still relevant in contemporary society. Feel free to bring along zines/writing to share or talk about. led by colette who writes, trades and distros zines but is too young to have experienced riot grrrl first hand.

P.S. this workshop isn't suitable for children

2.30-4pm Women's Media Collectives Panel (seminar room)

Chaired by debi withers, this panel considers feminist media collectives past and present. Participants include Jess Baines (See Red poster making collective & Women in Print), Rahila Gupta of Outwrite (anti-imperialist women's newspaper in the 80s), Holly from RAG (anarcha-feminist group/magazine based in Dublin) and Melissa from Cherry Bomb Comics (based in Auckland and London).

This discussion panel opens up important histories & looks at how women have worked together from the second to the third wave to create ongoing independent, visual, publishing projects. Come and ask your questions!

12-4pm Comic Exhibition (cafe space)

Curated by Melanie Maddison (Colouring Outside the Lines art zine), this UK-focused comic exhibition will feature women and transgender comic makers sharing their publications and original artworks.

12-4pm Outwrite Exhibition (cafe space)

Members of the FAF Feminist History Group will be showcasing their exhibition ideas on the anti-imperialist women's newspaper Outwrite, as the first stage of an ongoing project. They're also looking for volunteers to get involved in the exhibition, so find out more at www.feministactivistforum.org.uk

12-4pm Riot Grrrl Portrait Project (cafe space)

A photo booth with Jade French, a photographer who is collecting portraits of people who have been inspired by riot grrrl for a website exhibition project. Get involved and share your grrrl love!

12-4pm Stalls (mezzanine and cafe space)

Manifesta, Subtext, Paper Dinosaur, Richochet Richochet!, Cherry Bomb, Unfinished Histories, Marching Stars, Emma Jane Falconer, Feminist Childrearing Zine Group, Liz Greenfield, Ilk, 56a Info Shop, Handmedown, Save Lambeth Women's Project, Pamflet, Cowley Club, Lonely Panada, Great Cake Escape

Ten Songs Podcast is a free monthly podcast you can download, stream or subscribe to using ITunes. I play a mix of punk, hardcore, garage and folk in a radio show format. Myspace is being a shit again and blocking my link so you'll have to google search "Ten Songs Podcast". But its totally worth the hassle....

This months show = No theme sets. No local sets. No bullshit. Just rad tunes. Get in. I'm playing 86 Mentality, Disco Assault, Ten Yard Fight, Bad Choice, Social Circkle, Impulse International, Failures Union, Statues, Pink Razors and the Mega Games 2.

Enjoy!

Ten Songs Podcast #11-  This is the final part of a trilogy of shows focusing on punk and hardcore in my home town of Southampton. I’ve saved some gems until last so I hope you dig it – this time there’s tracks from Gordon Gano’s Army, Business of Death, 7 Arrows Through Your Bastard Heart, Through These Eyes and Minute Manifesto. There’s also a bunch of other cool pop punk and garage tracks from the Tramrons, the Marked Men, New Bomb Turks, Bangers and Nobunny.

If you've never checked out the show before, Ten Songs is a monthly DIY home-made "radio show" that you can listen to as an MP3. I play a mix of punk, hardcore, garage and folk. You can stream, download or subscribe to the show using itunes or other podcast catchers from http://tensongspodcast.blogspot.com

Ten Songs Podcast#8- punk/hc "radio show"

Ten Songs Podcast is a DIY "radio show" that you can download as a MP3, stream and subscribe to for free at http://tensongspodcast.blogspot.com

#8 is Augusts show. Right now, I'm hoping the rain will finally stop for a decent amount of time and we can actually have a summer but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one. Oh well. Anyhow, I picked up the latest issue of Cometbus and with it the Pinhead Gunpowder best of. So this month I'm playing a set of Aaron Cometbus related bands (Pinhead Gunpowder, Astrid Oto, The Blank Fight, Colbom) to soundtrack those cancelled camping trips and rained off hikes. The other bands I'm playing this out are The Ergs!, Criminal Damage, Have Heart, Undertow, No Substance and Spoonboy.

Really really looking forward to this on Saturday! It was the Zine Fest at the Women's Library in 2007 that finally inspired me to start a distro so it's really exciting to be back over a year and half later with a distro still going strong!
