Thora-Zine magazine was published between 1992 and 1997 by Brent Bruni Comiskey in Houston and Austin with the extraordinary help of other editors and writers, distributed widely among the international underground by over 50 independent distributors worldwide. Only nine epic issues were printed, each with their own illogical disorder, three of which contain flexi-disc records with exclusive sounds from the Melvins, Eyehategod, Mojo Nixon and Dixie Waste. The crowning obscurity of Thora-Zine was the handywork of Damon O'Banion, who lost his battle with life in 2007. Damon was a shrewd magazine editor, having arranged a discussion between Helios Creed and James Brown. Another gritty meeting was Gibby Haynes vs Willie Nelson. Roky Erickson was there too, sorta.
Daimyo Gyoretsu + Emos + Austin + Texas + 1996
10 Years in Ponderosa
Also in the mid 90s, Nathan Espen (currently known as Xathax) and Brent formed an art-damaged noiserock group called Diamond Shamrock. Brent managed two tours of Japan in 1996 with Exile Osaka zine for the Yoshimoto Corporation, featuring the Motards, Daimyo Gyoretsu (Space Kings of Carnival) and several other uberscum groups of the era. The berzerko 67 track Noise Kills Punk Dead compilation CD produced by Brent was released in 1999 by your friend Kenyata Sullivan. Several of mp3s posted above were released on NKPD- recorded on vintage cassette players by various international tape cadets without studios or overdubs. The early 2000s were spent in Houston at harsh noise shows and breakcore warehouse parties with the Briokids and mixing live video art at clubs and contemporary art venues.
People Who Do Noise
Afterbirth on the Mountain
In recent years, Brent has been working as an artist-photographer, shooting documentary and abstract images by the tens of thousands in the states and Europe, and was recently granted a residency with the Art for Cancer network. His work has been shown in the underground at Super Happy Funland, Southmore House, Bar Noise, Church of the Friendly Ghost and on Paris-Kyoto, as well as formal contemporary art venues such as AMODA (Austin Museum of Digital Art), the Station Museum of Contemporary Art, Barnevelder Arts Complex and the New Orleans Media Experience. Houston City Hall obtained a photograph on loan in 2006.
Pulse-Repulse Collective
Brent and his wizardly homegirl recently formed an art collective called Pulse-Repulse. The group is has several major projects in production; a photographic anti-magazine, a large-scale stainless steel sculpture, a conceptual art gallery, and a display at the Wortham Center Houston, honoring the artwork of Christine Bruni Fondren. Pulse-Repulse and Pitchphase are planning to release a no-fi recording of words and noise made on a handheld cassette recorder by nowhereman Michael IX Williams of Outlaw Order and EyeHateGod, based on his laryngitis writings from the book "Cancer as a Social Activity: Affirmations of World's End".
