ZipWire is an unlikely, intriguing collaboration between Black Eyed Susies’ members Leah Houghtaling and Amelia Sauter, and Jules Piper of The Witching. The girls have dubbed their unique melding of sounds “Ithacountry,” characterized by the intermingling of rock, Americana, folk and country that one might come to expect in Ithaca. Jules’ growling vocals, Amelia’s country harmonies and Leah’s driving banjo provide the platform for a point-and-shoot high energy performance laced with three-part harmonies.
ZipWire’s influences range from old time and folk to classical and hard rock. Jules Piper traveled as the folk rock duo Jules and Dami before playing electric guitar with the heavy-hitting rock band The Witching from 2004-2006. Most recently she has performed as a solo artist. Jules is an outright live wire on stage, with an infectious songwriting style, lively guitar technique and growling, aggressive vocals. Amelia Sauter and Leah Houghtaling were two of the three voices of the Black Eyed Susies from 2007-2009. Amelia plucks the bass strings resonantly and sings with a voice that has been described as “wicked old-school country.” Leah drives ZipWire’s hint of twang-rock with an uncommon claw-hammer-meets-melodic-experimental banjo style.
ZipWire debuted in February 2009 at Castaways for Bob Proehl’s Burrito Brothers/Graham Parsons show, alongside Johnny Dowd, Mary Lorson and Steve Gollnick. They have spring and summer shows scheduled in Ithaca, Syracuse, Rochester and Pennsylvania.
