Zircon[zir'kon] n 1. a tetragonial mineral pertaining to 4 sides; zirconium silicate,sometimes used as a gem. 2. a metallic element combined with other elements and used in a formula to protect metal from oxidation. 3. A New England based black/death/thrash metal band with a metal formula of their own often imitated but never equaled. 4. a super conductive element that enhances electrical power. 5. a shield for metal; defender of all that is metal.
History:
Zircon was founded in 97 by Scott Wily in New Jersey. He played all instruments and recorded the first songs on a 4-track in 98 now known as rough mix 1 . In 99 the band came to form in Worcester,Massachusetts. Eric Blais, Joel Maki and Jay Caplette completed the line up. In 2000 Zircon began to play show's in Worcester. Most of the live performances were at the Worcester Palladium with national acts such as Mayhem,Cryptopsy,Dark Funeral,and Vital Remains. In 2001 Zircon had played the 3rd NE Metal/Hardcore fest held at the Palladium with Dimmu Borgir,Cannibal Corpse,Lamb of God, Monstrosity and many more. There were many unreleased rehearsal and demo recordings from 98-02. Scott had made another recording know as rough mix 2. Only 50 copy's were made. The band went through down time and line up changes for 2 years. Scott and Eric continued where Zircon left off in 04. Chris Farmerie from Acephalus,Despoilment,Bane of Existence took up bass duties. Zircon started rehearsing again regularly.
05 was when the resurgence of Zircon began. Continuously booking many local shows and playing all over Massachusetts Zircon became unstoppable. Lead by Scott Wily Zircon became one of the most productive and well known black/death metal bands from New England. The first EP was recorded at Vemplore studio's by Dorian Gatej. This EP was played on radio stations all over the world including WAAF, a major radio station in NE. 5,000 copy's were made and passed out all over the NE area. The CD served as a very good promotion tool. Thousands of sticker's and flier's were passed out to metal fan's. Radio station's, magazines, major labels, booking agents and promoter's were contacted, continuously. Zircon's self promoting created a very big buzz and the band got attention and offer's from a few independent record labels
06 Zircon began playing out of state including the NY Death fest with Immolation, Providence RI with Vital Remains and Bedford NH with Six Feet Under,Cryptopsy and many more. Several shows were played in the Boston area with Cryptopsy,Cattle Decapitation and Godless Rising. Zircon also jumped aboard Cryptopsy's U.S. tour for the NE dates.
Summer of 06 Scott Wily was asked to play guitar for Godless Rising(former members of Vital Remains) for a full U.S. tour. When he got back, Zircon entered the studio to finish the split album,Vastlands(TM) with Nephilim. Zircon signed to Oaknoll towards the end of 06 and the split album was released. Also at the end of 06 Scott Wily tried out for Vital Remains and was rehearsing with them regularly but failed to secure a passport in time for the Europian tour.
07 Jay Caplette left the band due to personal strife so Anthony Paulini from Belphegor,Coffin Birth joined Zircon for 6 months . Zircon had played more shows in NH with Dark Funeral,Enslaved,1349,Belphegor,Krisiun +many more. In January of 07 Zircon teamed up with Sapremia for a tour to N.J., Upstate NY, Allentown, and Philadelphia,PA...
In summer of 07 Anthony had other obligations so a new guitar player arised to play for Zircon. Hel from Infernal Devotion took up guitar duties. Hel moved to the U.S. from Brazil and is very skilled in the black metal arts. The first show with Hel was at the Palladium; the Summer Slaughter tour 07. That was Zircon's first show back at the Palladium in over 5 years. Many more shows followed including NYC with Hung and more local shows, including Metal Thursdays at Ralph's... In September Zircon joined with Insatanity for the Mourning the Weak tour through the U.S. and Canada.
08 Scott joined Vital Remains as a live vocalist and did the unstoppable force tour with Monstrosity and Forever in Terror. Also, a small tour with Skinless & Inferneon.
Summer 08 Zircon got together with Sapremia again for the Southern Despair tour through the east coast.
09 Hel has departed from the band. Anthony has taken up guitar duties once again.
Presently Zircon is working on new art and writing new material.

The year is 3006 and this is Emperor Xereth's unreachable Zircon fortress in the red sea.. The fortress is also a space station and transforms into an under water base. Emperor Xereth's indestructible castle resides in Transilvania where Dracula's castle once stood when it is on land.
Zirconium (Zr) is a grayish-white, "metallic element" (metal music) with an atomic number of 40. It naturally combines with silica and oxygen to form the mineral zircon (ZrSiO4), the primary ore of this element. Zirconium reacts with oxygen, forming a thin coating of zirconium oxide on its surface. This coating "protects the metal from further oxidation". (On our band page our headline is "preserving the metal") Zirconium is quite resistant to corrosion by acids and other chemicals, and is valued in industry for this resistant quality zircon was created from the Arabic word zargun. Zirconium is used in a number of industrial applications because it is so resistant to corrosion. It is used in pumps and valves and the cores of nuclear reactors. Zirconium oxide is used to make laboratory crucibles and to line furnaces. When zirconium is alloyed (mixed) with the element niobium, it becomes superconductive. This means that it is able to conduct electricity with very little loss of energy to electric resistance. Superconductivity is possible only at very low temperatures. Another feature of zirconium is that it does not absorb neutrons (unlike hafnium, which absorbs neutrons, and is also found in zirconium deposits). This makes it useful in nuclear applications, where it is used as fuel cladding in nuclear reactors, and as a coating on nuclear fuel parts.
