Zoë Xenia, hailing from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, began her music career from a young age as a singer / songwriter with various alternative/rock bands. That is, until she first heard House music. Bitten by the House bug, and longing to be more than a singer in a band, she began to produce music and develop her own electronic style - a hybrid of rolling bass and funked-up beats. Using her voice not only as a vocal, but also as an instrument itself, keeping her firmly on the avant-garde tip. "I like to improvise and try things with my voice, it's an instrument I carry everywhere; like recording myself having the hiccups, and making some fine rhythms with it." She made it to the Diesel-U-Music Benelux finals in 2003, was a selected finalist at Grote Prijs van Nederland in 2004 and now performs as a vocalist/mc, dj and electronic live-act on parties and festivals throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
Her first EP was released on ArtMiniMal in Spring 2007, followed by a release on Organised Music and an invitation to play at WMC Miami. Her track Cherish on Connaisseur recordings became house tune of the month in the November 2007 issue of Mix Mag, got an excellent review in De:Bug and was played by artists like Tiefschwarz, Mike Monday, Miss Jools, 3 Channels and Fabrice Lig. Her “Uncovered EP” solo debut on Connaisseur was marked as one of the five Connaisseur essentials in Resident Advisor and her track Forever picked out as one of the highlights of the Grand Cru 2008 compilation in Mixmag's June 2008 issue. She signed up with Kosmo Records for an album deal and in December a new solo ep is coming out on D'julz's new label BassCulture with remixes from both Damian Schwartz and Anonym.
Apart from producing her own music, ZoëXenia sometimes works as a vocalist for other artists. Pacha Recordings invited her to come to Ibiza and record vocals for global all star producer Richard Grey. She did vocals & lyrics for the track Dirty Games on Dub Taylor's Humatron album and Kosmo Records approached her to write vocals for the new mixes of BBE's huge dance-hit 7 days and one week that just came out on Beatport
Advancing and refining what (electronic) music can be and collaborating with different artists, are the inspiration for what Zoë Xenia does. Equally important is how she brings that to the dance floor. On stage she has remarkable presence. With her powerful, soulful voice, and her ability to produce sounds as if from another planet, she weaves together a hypnotic, ecstatic experience for the listener and an extremely funked up situation for the dancing crowd; an exchange of energy that dissolves boundaries, where music becomes a universal language. Zoë will do even as fine at tearing up a dancefloor with an twisted electronic underground set as well as with a more accessible funked up House tracklisting.
She is one of the Dutch ambassadors of the worldwide known charity organization dance4life, the organisation that devotes itself to inform youth about Aids and HIV prevention, using dance and music as a medium to get the young generation involved with HIV and aids problematic. An absolute highlight was her performance for dance4life at Gelredome stadium, singing from a high pillar before the immense crowd drawn for the event.
Last year she recorded a track with Jesse Voorn called SeeMe, which became the official anthem for the first SeeMe Music Conference in Sofia Bulgaria and also donated a new track to the dance4life2009 cd. You can support dancelife and buy it here:
