Graduates of the 1st year of the Create This! music training course have come together to teach the world that young people with learning disabilities want to rock harder than ever before!
Zombie Crash are a loud, noisy, chaotic heavy metal band from Brighton consisting of 5 friends writing songs about whatever they please, including vampires, zombies, rocking out in a band and even girls. A band that spend their energy in what they do best: performing on stage with sheer volume from both their voiceboxes and amps.
"THE BAND IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE! WITH ROCK & ROLL AND METAL!"
Formed: September 2008 (name came in February 2009)
Genres: Alternative, Hip-Hop, Post-Grunge, Hard Rock, Hardcore Punk, Progressive Rock, Rock & Roll, Blues, Heavy Metal, Speed Metal, Thrash Metal, Power Metal
The band consists of five young adults who graduated on the Create This! course. And they are as follows:
On the drums is Darren Baker. This guy may not speak much, but nonetheless energetic when behind a drum kit. Orientated or not, his drumbeats are a contribution to the best of his ability.
James Barnett has spent most of his time being an additional vocalist, spending his energy as quickly as possible putting aggression into his voice and movements. Now he joins Darren as an additional drummer to make the beat bigger. He occasionally switches between the two positions.
Currently Carousel's only left-handed guitar player, Luc Eisenbarth is Zombie Crash's rhythm guitarist and one of their vocalists. He has dedicated himself to Rock & Roll with a passion. Luc is also a member of the Shut Up And Listen! steering committee.
Also in the band is keyboard player and singer Darrel Farley, who is the eldest in the band. Although a fan of rock music, he brings a touch of hip-hop and rap into the scene, as is noticed from his song 'We Want Violence' on the Create This! course.
And last, but not least, on lead guitar (sometimes bass) and vocals is Zombie Crash's frontman Ryan O'Donovan. Being in Beat Express as well, Ryan is the only one in Carousel to be in two bands. Whether on his Gibson Les Paul Epiphone or his Samick bass, he is best in what he does: rocking hard on stage. Ryan is also a member of the Shut Up And Listen! steering committee.
CREATE THIS! (2007 to 2008)
As a mix of people with and without experience in playing musical instruments, Zombie Crash began their musical journey on the Create This! music course run by Carousel's rock band Beat Express. Among them were two others Michael Rowe and Jolene Wild who would later become a duo known as The Fuzzbomb Band.
The guys recorded many songs in different groups. Additionally, they recorded solo songs; Overthrow The Law (Ryan), DX Champ (James), Rock & Roll Zone (Luc), We Want Violence (Darrel) and Yeah! (Darren). One of their songs Nuclear Explosion (later Rock & Roll Explosion) would later become one of the band's, as the people in it were exactly the same.
They played at several gigs - the Blue Camel Club in February and in May 2008. Also they played at the end of term 2 party in front of their friends/relatives at Brighton Electric. They also perforned at the Create This! Graduation Party at the Community Base in Brighton, where the Carousel office is.
AFTER CREATE THIS!
Everyone on the Create This! course graduated and returned in September starting with a gig at the Blue Camel Club, where Beat Express were playing to celebrate the release of their album Rockstars. Ryan had also officially joined Beat Express as their new guitarist and backing singer. And of course, the Create This! graduates played their greatest songs from the course. The two new bands were still nameless, but they returned nonetheless for monthly band practices from September to June. Carousel's music facilitators Tom Cook and Richard Phoenix became their backing musicians - in Zombie Crash's case, Tom was on bass while Richard was on drums. During Autumn 2008 they recorded Halloween 2008 which they played at the Blue Camel Club in December. After that gig they recorded a song called Kiss Snog Sex. Ryan's best friend Roshan 'Raj King' Patel helped with the lyrics as he had developed a talent for rapping.
2009
The band returned in January and recorded their next song Girls. It was the first song recorded with Ryan on bass. In February they officially named themselves Zombie Crash. The band now had 4 songs: Rock & Roll Explosion, Halloween 2008, Kiss Snog Sex and Girls. They played at the Blue Camel Club in that month. They also played in July at the Memorial Hall in Patcham for Luc's 18th birthday party. It was Zombie Crash's last gig before their Summer break. It was also the last time Darren was on stage. During the Spring and Summer James had taken a break from being an additional vocalist. He joined Darren as an additional drummer, leaving all the vocals to Ryan, Luc and Darrel. By the Summer, Rock & Roll Explosion was featured on Wild Things: Sounds of the Disabled Underground Volume 2.
In August, Luc and his parents were producing their own Lord of the Rings film with Luc as Aragorn. His supporter Madeline Denny sought out several other people to complete the cast. Ryan was cast as Legolas. Jolene from The Fuzzbomb Band was cast as an orc, although she had lines for Galadriel and Theoden too. Beat Express' drummer Chris Rider was also cast as Gimli.
LATE 2009 ONWARDS
After the Summer, Zombie Crash played all their songs at the first Rock House, a monthly event at the Westhill Hall in Brighton, organised completely by Tom and Richard. They played again at the Blue Camel Club dressed in different costumes, as the sub-heading for the event was Fancy this Fancy that. Ryan was dressed as James Hetfield from Metallica, James was dressed as WWE superstar Shawn Michaels, Luc was dressed as a cowboy and Darrel was dressed as a mafia boss. They also headlined the second Rock House in October and played two new songs Street Fight and 2010 that have yet to be recorded.
Zombie Crash are expected to have three more songs The Aftermath, Street Fight and 2010 completed during Winter 2009/2010. They will also be playing at the next two Rock Houses in November and December. They are also scheduled to perform at Komedia in Brighton on December 10th which will be the launch party for Wild Things: Sounds of the Disabled Underground Volume 2.
