Steve Vai is pretty much at the top of my list for influences. Here are a few others: Joe Satriani, George Lynch, Reb Beach, Vitto Bratta, Alex Skolnick, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, and Randy Rhodes. I do play bass guitar as well, but it's not my main instrument.
I don't really have any influences for the way I play bass, although the two players I really look up to on bass are Billy Sheehan and Stu Hamm. I pretty much play it like a regular guitar - with a pick, and lots of alternate picking. Don't all guitarists play bass like that anyways? :o)
Musical (Bands) Influences:
Megadeth, Testament, Anthrax, Metallica, Queensryche, Dokken, Cinderella, STP, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Imogen Heap (Frou Frou), Aimee Mann, Chantal Kreviazuk, Heather Nova, Michele Branch, Jewel, and Liz Phair.
Sounds Like
From soft rock or folk to heavy metal. I play it all....except country.
I play under the name Aeryn Sun and call my project Zone39. I would've went with Area39, but it was already taken by some Brits across the pond.
I started playing in the late 80's but that only lasted for a couple of years. I didn't get very far with it. I didn't have any instruction so I was left with playing power chords and messing with the whammy bar.
I went to college after high school and the guitar was put away until the summer of 2006. A coworker friend of mine was talking about how he got back into playing guitar again after being away from it for about 30 years. That made me get back into it. So I went home, pulled out that Ibanez 570 and started playing again.
It took several months to get my coordination back, but I eventually got where I had left off from going to college. I dove pretty hard into music theory and practicing all I can.
Fast forward to today, I'm still studying music theory all I can. I've got lots of books and DVDs on the subject and they've provided me with a wealth of information. It's helped me out tremedously with what I've written recently.
People will sometimes ask me how long I've been playing. As I didn't get much out of it back in the late 80s I usually just say about 2 years now (currently it's 2008). This time is different though. This time I won't be putting the guitar down again.
I play alot of different stuff; sometimes it's metal, sometimes it's easy going and kinda folkish or bluesy or jazzy, and sometimes it might be a little electronic in nature. Just depends on my mood and what song starts playing in my mind.
Most of the stuff I write comes from my head - some little groove that popped in there somehow. Some of it comes from practicing. I'll be going thru an exercise and will play a phrase that automatically launches a cool groove in my head.
I'm pretty much a one-person band - a project if you will. I have a wide variety of ideas and emotions that I want to get across and I won't do that with just one musical style. My influences range greatly just like my playing. My guitar influences are pretty much metal guitarists, but my song creation delves into other areas like folk, or electronica, or blues.

I'm going to be uploading more songs as I have time to put the finishing touches on them. Please feel free to comment on them.
