Review :
Madrugada contains some very danceable, very listenable music. The kind of stuff that some popular club DJs would call “jazz remixes”. Whether the jazz cognoscenti are prepared to embrace such an offering is another question altogether. However, Italian bassist Enzo Torregrossa, the prime architect and author of the project, is a bona fide jazzman, who has logged sessions with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie. The influence of classic bossa nova and samba as purveyed by Astrud Gilberto and Gilberto Gil dominates the disc. Great examples of this are to be found on Fortuna and Penso Em Mim (featuring Manola Micalizzi), and Brasilena.

In January 2005, ZONE was chosen among over a 1000 other artists from 20+ countries to showcase on the 24/01/05;Live Upstairs at Midem at the Palais des Festivals. On this jazz world evening, an enthusiastic music industry audience and ZONE made it a night to remember, just ask around those who were there. Whos s is ZONE? Enzo Torregrossa AKA ZONE, is among the very best modern jazz players in the world. And, lucky for us, the Italian bass player, who has performed alongside masters Dizzie Gillespie and Kenneth Jackson, is back in action. His latest album, 'MADRUGADA' (dawn in Brazilian Portuguese), is a delightful collection of beautifully arranged electronic nu jazz. Featuring singer/songwriter MANOLA MICALIZZI on vocals, the album is peppered with just enough Brazilian beats to add a special tropical sparkle to your day. Enzo has won a Globo D'Oro and the Italian prize Nastro D'Argento with his film score for Italian director Gabriele Salvatores films, as well as written numerous works for Italian and French TV stations. On MADRUGADA, ZONE explores his newly found identity on technology mixing it with trademark live arrangements, cleverly mounding contemporary jazz into dance culture. Breaking new grounds in modern Latin music via songs like PENSO EM MIM (feat. singer/songwriter - MANOLA MICALIZZI), ZONE places himself high next to the peers that inspired him in the first place. Almost Tomorrow is the third full length collaboration album from Section 27 Netlabel founders Tam Ferrans and Andrew Paterson, under their Nonima & theAudiologist guise. This time around the sound is more melodic, and has a definite feeling of a complete and more mature sound than heard on the previous LP's "Dystopian Battle Hymns" and "Ceremony After Amputation". If you are familiar with their individual projects you may even be in for a slight surprise, as the tracks are not as beat driven like before, but are more atmospheric and sound, well... "bigger". In its 75 minutes, Almost Tomorrow takes you on a trip from the digital rain-soaked cavernous scraping in "Thoughtograph", the ethereal beat jittering of "The Colour of Rain", intercepted transmissions from unknown places in "Com-Intercept", "Ganzfeld"s huge yet strangely insect-like beats until everything you knew comes crashing around you in "Almost Tomorrow". Burning pianos, glitched out soundscapes and intricately programmed beatplay, this may well be their best work to date. Consider it the soundtrack to a rainy overcastday, but with just that glimmer of sunshine peeking from the clouds. "Almost Tomorrow" wears its heart on its sleeve.

A banner for a year would cost the band or you, 100 Euro VAT.excluded, and the band is mentioned in our newsletter. We hold the right to say no to a banner or band.
