"If you like the off-centre approach to lyrics a la Prince Paul, Aspects, MC Paul Barman and the gritty beats of De La, Jungle Brothers, Kutmasta Kurt and Quasimoto you should check out Zooface...all I can tell you is that Zooface are one of the best outfits around...they can rhyme, produce, cut and scratch with the best of them and they're exploding with ideas." My first meeting with the three ingredients of Zooface came about nearly ten
years ago. At that time I was producing the debut album (Cheese for Chumps),
for the band The Peoples Chocolate Army. The seven members of the band were
all extremely talented but two drew my attention immediately. Colin or
Zachary Birdnoose as he was known back then could bang a set of pans to make
even the blindest man see; whilst Chill Will (Zoot Maclamay) had a way of
blowing a horn that parched the throats of water babies everywhere. When the
rest of the band had retired for the day these two musical warhorses would
stay behind talking about all elements of music. Sometimes sleeping in the
studio inside a long forgotten hollowed out sheeps head.
It was during one of these all night sessions or anessions as we would call
them that the third member of the Zooface family raised his moss chops and
the magic began.Fatty Acids, (Jonty Slackborne), was recording in the
studio next door with his band The Men Men. This four piece odyssey never
shirked their doctrine of playing live with negative or no instruments.
Fatty found the whole four piece structure constricting and was looking for
something new, he found it.
The three met and decided to dedicate their combined talents to creating the
most wigged out Hip Hop in the world
But it wasnt as simple as that, oh no. Before Zooface could record a single
word they were all press ganged into joining yet another Psych/ooom pah
band. You or someone you know, will definitely own one of their delightful
platters of corrugated cut along the line a stitch in time lime and wondrous
musical fare (and that is a fact). Thats right I am talking about Pig
finger.
As the embers of a year long tour of the Channel Islands were being
extinguished a single spark floated away across the sea. Zooface being
lovers of shiny things followed that spark, until at last they were able to
rest in a dusty old jam jar. Jam jar glass is known for its brittle
qualities and with their combined might the Zoo smashed their way out to
funky freedom.
Today still as mighty but fractionally taller Zooface are able to bring the
world their poetic lunacy. So raise a glass along with me and drink deep for
Colin Esterol, Fatty Acids, and Chill Willy. Zooface Zooface Zooface.
