| About Zook |
Drummer/percussionist Simon Charterton and session guitarist/harmonica player William Denton formed Zook in 2000. The North Londoners wanted to go back to basics with Zook, opting to play everything themselves on real instruments in real time. The result is an extremely addictive, laid-back concoction of minimalist, bluesy dance music, or 'acoustic funk'.
Zook's ultra-relaxed approach to writing spilled over into their not-so heavy recording schedule, consequently they only released a 7'' single 'Slinky'/'Slinky Version' in Spring 2001 on their own Empire label and followed it up a mere 18 months later with a second single 'Slerky'/'Bastinado'. Both sold out rapidly and were turntable favourites for DJs such as Norman Jay, Gilles Peterson and Jerry Dammers.
Exhausted by these efforts, Zook went into semi-retirement until 2004 when Tim Love Lee, the man behind the woman in front of Tummy Touch Records, heard the singles in New York and coaxed the band out of hibernation to record 'Music from the Accumulator'. The results of this enforced bout of intense activity did not go unnoticed by Zook's friends, with special album appearances by Barrie from Little Barrie and Mark from Young Disciples on the track 'Spook'.
In summer 2006, Zook recorded some Thelonious Monk tunes under the name Mook, which can be heard at www.myspace.com/zookmonk.
Zook also recorded a cover version of New Order's Blue Monday. This can be heard at
www.ttremastered.com and is available on a limited edition joint 7" single with Coco Electrik (Tummy Touch Records)
