In the 20th century, society has worried about limiting and
locking art in museums, theatres, and art galleries, keeping it far away from
people’s daily experience. But, the everlasting power of beauty can never be
locked in a cage. Each day, from any part of the world, its freedom shout rises.
The sounds coming from the street, the people’s voices, the loud noises of car
alarms, and fire truck sirens can be taken and used in combination with the
traditional sounds of music.
The Zoo Project
Like in a zoo, where visitors stop at each animal’s cage, in the “ZOO”
performance, the audience walks among the musicians who play the compositions
written by composers all over the world, specifically for this event.
The Modular Art
With the word Modulart, we define a methodology which allows one or more artists
to combine their works in a constantly evolving project.
Modular Art and the Zoo project in particular, represent not only a performance
and a new methodology, but also a new philosophy, and above all, a new way of
perceiving music and art.
The music
The concert is based on 10 piano compositions (original modules) by S. Vagnini.
Many composers from all over the world added new pieces of music for other
instruments to the 10 original modules.
The Zoo performance
The 10 piano compositions will be spread from a “Musical Navel” located in the
centre of the park.
Like animals in a zoo, the performers surround the “Navel”, and the audience
will walk through and towards them as they prefer, without following a specific
path, but freely choosing which module they want to see and hear, creating their
own compositions.
What’s a modular project?
A modular project is a work made of modules layered one over the other. In music
for example we have a modular work when to a given composition –which we called
original module-, another musician decides to add a new piece of music over it.
The Opera does not belong to only one composer but to everyone who is involved
in it, to everyone who decides to write a new piece of music over the original
first composition.
This process we can extend to any kind of art.
When?
The event will take place every year, and every year the project will be greatly
expanded. Zoo, as any other modular project, is always open to new compositions,
composers, cultures and arts' languages.
