LINDA GAME fiddle/mandolin/mandola/ vocals After doing a teaching degree at the Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, Linda discovered folk music! Since moving to Brighton 24 years ago Linda has played differing styles, from jazz and rock through to traditional music. She played for the Brighton based American Appalachian dance team Broken Ankles for 18 years, and was one of The Kitchen Girls. She left Brighton's Folk Rock band The Fold, after 13 years of rocking! At the moment she is also a member of Token Women and The English Contra Dance Band. . ...................................................................................................................... JO MAY percussion/vocals In Zoox Jo draws on her knowledge of different traditions around the world, using instruments such as the djembe, bodhran, darabuka and congas. Jo trained at the Royal College of Music and began her career working with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra. A trip to Sidmouth Folk Festival sparked an enthusiasm for traditional music, and has led to her involvement with folk groups, including the ceilidh band Token Women and the European group Freyja. She also worked with the trio, Tapatak. Outside of Zoox Jo runs a range of exciting rhythm-based workshops from djembe to spoons ! ................................................................................................................ BECKY MENDAY saxes/whistles/contrabassoon/vocals Initially playing soprano sax for a klezmer band, Becky was soon adding her melodies to the wonderful percussive sounds of Kerry Fletcher and Jo May in Tapatak. Her musical influences particularly come from Klezmer and Eastern European Music, as well as traditional music from around the British Isles, contemporary pop, dance and classical music. As a professional bassoonist, Becky played with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic and Glyndebourne Touring Opera. -

Dogan Mehmet and The Deerhunters - Live at the Green Note, Monday 20th December with support from Laura Victoria
Dogan Mehmet, along with his backing band the Deerhunters, creates an Anglo-Turkish, Gypsy-Punk style mix of traditions and strong acoustic grooves. A diverse mixture of Southern English and Turkish folk songs, self-penned material and driven tunes from English Morris as well as Cypriot traditions give Dogan his own captivating sound.

STATE TO STATE
(TUNE:

From Sydney Town,
In uni. break,
I drove out west
To earnings make
Onion picking,
On the fields
Of Echuca,
That year’s yields.
After day’s work,
From Y.H.A.,
A group of us
Would not delay
To walk on down
To the dirt rim
Of the Murray,
For a cool swim.
On one such day,
I do declare,
Some three of us
Had a big dare
To swim across,
From state to state,
The wide Murray -
I took the bait.
Yes, foolishly,
I took the bait -
A choice that I
Would come to hate,
For I almost
Did drown that date,
Making the swim
From state to state.
