Le Zozophonic Orchestra est un quartet fondé en 2006 et largement inspiré par le blues rural acoustique du début du siècle. Leur musique est néanmoins contemporaine : Samples, musiques improvisées, rythmes hip hop, influences africaines émaillent tout le répertoire – tant dans les compositions que dans la tradition revisitée.
Basé en France, le groupe a cependant eu l’occasion de se produire dans différents pays, et notamment dans les Balkans où ils ont donné quelques 50 concerts ces 2 dernières années (Sarajevo, Dubrovnik, Ljubljana, Zagreb…). L’été 2009 les a également vu à l’affiche de différent festivals en France : Jazz à Vienne, Un été à Bourges, le Col des 1000 etc.
Bien que l’improvisation ainsi que le mélange d’instruments acoustiques et électriques restent essentiels, leur travail s’oriente maintenant vers une musique plus soul/groove. Par ailleurs la voix superbe du chanteur sénégalais Lassana Sané se joint désormais à la formation sur certains concerts, ajoutant le wolof en contrepoint de l’anglais et du français.
Après un premier disque (Blues Agricole Urbain), cette formation devrait retourner en studio durant l’hiver 2009/2010, pour un nouvel opus à sortir au printemps.
--------------------------------------------The ZOZOPHONIC ORCHESTRA is a quartet founded in 2006 and based in Grenoble and Lyon, France. They originally played what they called Blues agricole urbain (“Urban Country Blues”), music greatly inspired by early bluesmen but mixed with modern sounds.
They are now working on more upbeat and French-oriented original material. While improvisation, groove mixes, and a blend of acoustic and electric instruments are still important elements, their shows now often feature Senegalese vocalist Lassana Sané, adding a Wolof counterpoint to the French/English singing.
Although based in France, the band has toured in a variety of countries to growing acclaim, performing some 50 shows in the Balkans in the past 2 years (Sarajevo, Dubrovnik, Ljubljana, Zagreb…). Of course, the summer 2009 also saw they them appear in different festivals at home, including Jazz à Vienne, Un été à Bourges, and le Col des 1000.
To follow up on their first album, Blues Agricole Urbain, the band plans to return to the studio in the Winter 2009/2010 to record a new CD to be released in the Spring
