1989. Liberia enters into civil war. With random executions, famine and air strikes, crossfire, and even death…. Out of this chaos emerged a resilient young man, in most ways still a child. Whose mind was set to be reborn.
Now orphaned, but with extended family, Zhalman escapes his homeland, relocating to a refugee camp in Ghana. For ten years, he waits. He waits for comfort, waits for peace, and waits for a place to call home.
When these humble longings finally take root, Zhalman AKA Z-Plus finds himself living in the United States. Along with a few belongings, he carries his memories, both good and bad. And he carries the songs he wrote while living life as a refugee, and the hope to fulfill his dreams as an entertainer, in the land filled with the best you can find.
Critical Condition describes Z-Plus’ debut album as well as his growing-up years. His songs are not about the denigration of women, but the value of life. Not about the latest gang banging exploits, but about the deeper love he has for others, an unconditional love: No Ordinary Love. The war of Z-Plus’ music is not drug war, but civil war….one that cost him his own mother’s life.
Critical condition identifies the state of today’s youth as Z-Plus sees them. With his music, Z-Plus reaches out, rapping in a language that youth can understand. Through his performance, he gives another perspective, one of integrity, respect, and diligence.
10 years on a refugee camp, with pain and flashbacks of his youth in a war-torn land. One successful step at a time, Z-Plus has steadily moved forward. His original song, A.L Capon, penned and composed while in Africa, landed in the movie, Chill Factor, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. Impressed with his version of the song, Sade gave him permission to remake her classic hit, No Ordinary Love.
From his music, to the stage where he performs, to being a mentor as a “BIG” with the Minneapolis chapter of the Big Brother Big Sister organization, or in speaking to a youth crowd Zhalman always exhibits his passion in what he does as an entertainer.
Z-Plus takes his pain and shapes it into a magical experience that inspires his audiences worldwide.
